Everything you need to know about zeolite for your four-legged friend

Many dog owners know this feeling: their four-legged friend is eating well, but their stomach is rumbling. Their stool is too soft, their coat looks dull, and sometimes they smell stronger than usual. After deworming, antibiotics, or a change in diet, their digestion is suddenly out of balance. And a nagging worry creeps in: what if something's wrong? I want to help them – gently and naturally.

Overview and guide to zeolite for dogs

Dogs sense what's happening inside us and in their own bodies. If their stomach isn't settling down, we notice it immediately – in their eyes, their energy, their joy. Digestion is more than just a physical process for dogs – it's part of their overall well-being.

For us at Steinkraft, zeolite isn't simply a "feed additive," but a piece of earth in its purest form – a mineral that reminds the body how self-regulation works. In this guide, you'll learn how zeolite naturally supports your dog's system, when its use is beneficial, and why quality is crucial.

Zeolite (clinoptilolite) can be a valuable aid. This finely ground, natural volcanic mineral can bind excess fluid, toxins, and acids in the intestines and harmonize the digestive tract – entirely without chemical additives. Many dog owners report that their dog feels better after just a few days, its stools are formed again, and its coat regains its shine.

Labrador Retriever eats his dog food with zeolite from Steinkraft - an application example

Perhaps you've already considered trying zeolite yourself – and wondered what exactly it does, how to dose it, and whether it's suitable for your dog . This comprehensive guide tells you everything you need to know: its effects, dosage, application, studies, testimonials, and quality information – explained clearly and based on sound scientific principles.

The aim of this article is to give you confidence and knowledge – so that you understand how zeolite works in your dog's body, when it makes sense to give it, and how you can use it optimally.

At Steinkraft, we believe that every dog has the right to well-being. And every dog owner deserves clarity on how to naturally support their beloved pet's body.

Zeolite – the volcanic mineral that helps dogs stay balanced

Zeolite is a volcanic natural mineral with an extraordinary property: its crystal structure consists of millions of microscopic cavities. These act like a sponge for pollutants – they can bind ammonium, heavy metals, mycotoxins, and other unwanted substances in the digestive tract and eliminate them via feces. At the same time, minerals are released.
Clinoptilolite zeolite, as used in DOGKRAFT Zeolite, is a particularly pure and tribomechanically activated zeolite. Gentle pulverization opens the cavities and multiplies the binding capacity. This results in a fine, highly active rock flour that, as a feed additive, can support the body's natural detoxification processes – entirely without chemical additives.

When your dog can particularly benefit from zeolite

  1. When a dog's digestion is not in balance and harmony: i.e., in the case of diarrhea

A feed optimized with zeolite can help improve the digestion of dogs by removing excess fluids and toxins from the intestines, helping to regulate the pH level in the intestines, thereby preventing the growth of pathogenic bacteria, supporting the absorption of nutrients from food by improving intestinal permeability, helping to reduce inflammation in the intestines, and improving overall intestinal health.

TIP: Before starting a gut cleanse for your dog, many veterinarians recommend optimizing the dog food with zeolite beforehand to prepare the gut for the new microbiome by eliminating toxins and preparing the intestinal mucosa.

  2. If the dog's skin and coat health can be improved:

Dog food enriched with zeolite can help improve a dog's coat by removing pollutants and toxins that would otherwise be excreted through the skin. The coat, as an extension of the skin, acts as a large detoxification surface. It also supports your dog during shedding season (twice a year).

  3. It can help reduce the smell of dog urine and feces :

by removing toxins and excess acids that are responsible for the unpleasant odor.

  4. When a dog's immune system needs support:

Zeolite can help strengthen a dog's immune system by removing harmful substances that weaken it. Simply stir it into their food.

Effects, application, experience - My dog is getting flaky skin and hair loss due to a special food. Zeolite can help with this.
  5. If the dog is often lethargic and tired :

It can help improve the performance of dogs by improving the absorption of nutrients from food and keeping the intestines healthy.
It can help improve the overall well-being of dogs by supporting digestion and removing harmful substances from the body.

  6. After surgery or a course of medication, the body needs time to regain its balance. Zeolite can help with this by binding toxins and naturally relieving the burden on the body.

Or after vaccinations . Or deworming treatments. All of these can lead to an accumulation of heavy metals in the dog's body.

  7. When the dog lives in the city and is walked among the cars and exhaust fumes.

  8. If the dog food is contaminated with heavy metals .

Some studies have shown that zeolite can help remove heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury from the intestines of dogs. So add it to their food!

  9. If the dog food is contaminated with mycotoxins .

Mycotoxins are produced by molds and can cause many health problems. Some dogs also eat things they find on the ground. In such cases, zeolite should definitely be added to their food. Zeolite binds mycotoxins and removes them from the body.

  10. If the dog suffers from allergies .

“At Steinkraft, we see zeolite as a bridge between nature and knowledge.”

Why dog owners choose zeolite – real-life thoughts

I finally wanted to know what was truly good for my dog. ★★★★★
Vera with her dog Lilo (Retriever mix)

"Lilo kept having loose stools and loud stomach rumbling. After countless food changes, I didn't want to 'try' anything anymore, I wanted to understand. When I read about zeolite, the idea of simply supporting the body in its own cleansing process – not working against it – convinced me. After a week, her stools were firm, and Lilo was alive again. It was like a breath of fresh air – for both of us."

My gut feeling told me: Try it – it's nature. ★★★★★
Manuela with her dog Finn (Australian Shepherd)

"I'm not one to rush into buying new things. But I felt that Finn just wasn't the same after his deworming treatment. I didn't want anything chemical, but something that would gently bring him back into balance. Zeolite was my first attempt – and it became routine. Now he gets it daily, and I feel like his body is thanking me."

I was afraid of messing everything up again. ★★★★★
Claudia with senior dog Bella (Cocker Spaniel, 13 years old)

"Bella was getting old, and every change in her food was a risk. When she started refusing her food, I was desperate. Zeolite was my last resort – gentle, natural, without side effects. She's eating again, has a shiny coat, and looks at me with these bright eyes. I know I did the right thing."

I didn't want to constantly burden him with medication. ★★★★★
Thomas with his dog Balu (Labrador)

"Balu constantly had an itch and was regularly given pills. At some point, I felt: This can't be right. I wanted to support him from the inside. Zeolite was my answer. Since then, his skin has been calmer, and he hardly scratches anymore. I'm not into esotericism – but it just feels right."

Questions that many dog owners have asked us – and our answers based on experience

★ Can zeolite be used on all dogs?

Yes, dog food can be enhanced with zeolite for all dog breeds. And at any age – from puppies to senior dogs.

★ How is zeolite administered?

Zeolite is administered in powdered form and can either be mixed directly into food or stirred into water and added to the food. Make sure your dog drinks enough fluids when given zeolite. Our dog sometimes enjoys water with a splash of sheep's milk more, and he drinks more of it too.
If your dog is on medication, leave 2 hours between administering zeolite and the medication.

★ How can I use zeolite with dry food?

With wet food, it's easy to use. Just mix it in. That's also the original idea behind zeolite for optimizing feed. Mix it in homogeneously. Our experience with dry food: when the bag is freshly opened, the food is still slightly damp. (That's probably the wrong word for it – I think you know what I mean).

STEINKRAFT Zeolite Blog: How do you correctly dose zeolite for dogs and how do you use it?

What I mean is, the zeolite powder adheres well. So, just sprinkle it on and gently turn the food over. That way, it doesn't just sit on top like a dusting of sugar and scare the dog. I've also heard from customers who mix it into sheep's milk yogurt and pour it over the dry food. We did that too, after Ezra, our Labrador Retriever, had surgery and received a lot of medication. Essentially, it was a post-operative convalescence and detoxification treatment . My mother gives her dog a special raw, minced meal once a week, and she mixes it in. Bakku, of course, loves it (and has since spring). And now Winnie. Winnie is a rescue dog from a divorce and has found a perfect home with her grandparents. She arrived quite timid and with a lot of dandruff. We brought them a large container right away, and Winnie eats the zeolite powder without any fuss. After three weeks, there's no more dandruff.

★ How long does it take for zeolite to work?

The effects of zeolite can vary and depend on several factors, such as the size and health of the dog and the amount of toxins to be removed. Generally, an improvement in digestion should be observed within a few days, while the removal of toxins may take somewhat longer.

Zeolite for Dogs Blog: Diarrhea in dogs, symptoms, treatment, prevention

It's important to administer zeolite regularly and adhere to the recommended dosages to achieve the best results. Hang in there. Sometimes we read things like: "I've been giving him zeolite for three days now and he's still scratching..." or something similar.

Bakku, my parents' dog, used to get (or rather, had used to get) zeolite mixed into his food every now and then. About every two weeks, it was mixed into his minced meat. The next day, he was always much more energetic and jumping around like a young dog. According to my mother.

★ Can zeolite help in the treatment of certain health problems in dogs?

STEINKRAFT Zeolite for Dogs: The Effect of Clinoptilolite Zeolite on Tumor Diseases in Dogs - Expert Article

Zeolite can help treat certain health problems in dogs, particularly digestive issues and diarrhea . It can help regulate intestinal pH, remove excess fluids and toxins, and improve overall gut health. It can also improve nutrient absorption and reduce intestinal inflammation. However, it's important to note that zeolite should be used to optimize the dog's diet. This means mixing it thoroughly and homogeneously into the food.

★ Can zeolite help with diarrhea in dogs?

STEINKRAFT Zeolite for Dogs - Diarrhea in Dogs: Causes, Symptoms and Home Remedies

Yes, absolutely. Zeolite leads to improved gut health and also improved stool quality. This has been proven in studies.
The study by Januškevičius et al. (2013) , published in Veterinarija ir Zootechnika (64(86):3–10), investigated the effects of clinoptilolite zeolite as a feed additive in adult dogs. The aim was to evaluate the effects on digestion, fecal quality , and certain blood parameters .

Results:

  • Stool quality: Dogs in the zeolite group showed a significant improvement in stool consistency, with a reduction in moisture content, indicating better intestinal function.

  • Blood parameters: Positive changes were observed in blood values, including an increase in total protein content and lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels compared to the control group.

  • Nutrient utilization: The uptake of dry matter from the feed was improved in the zeolite group, indicating more efficient nutrient utilization.

These results suggest that supplementing dog food with clinoptilolite zeolite may have positive effects on digestive health and certain metabolic parameters. As you can see, this study suggests that zeolite could serve as a natural food additive to support intestinal function and overall health in dogs.

In summary: The addition of Clinoptilolite zeolite Adding this ingredient to the dog food led to a significant improvement in intestinal health and a reduction in stool moisture. This also improved stool quality, which is particularly beneficial for indoor pets.

★ Are there any side effects from using zeolite on dogs ?

Side effects from using zeolite in dogs are generally very rare. However, it's important to adhere to the recommended dosages and ensure the dog drinks plenty of fluids when administering zeolite. Due to its ability to remove toxins from the intestines, diarrhea or vomiting may sometimes occur during the first few days of use while the body adjusts to the zeolite powder. In some dogs, stool volume may increase; the intestines simply begin to empty more frequently. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, or if the dog exhibits any other unusual symptoms, you should consult a veterinarian immediately. But that goes without saying.

In this study Januškevičius et al. (2013), Veterinarija ir Zootechnika 64(86):3-10 also clearly demonstrated that zeolite can be given to dogs, in this case 10 German Shepherd bitches (2-4 years old) without any concerns. The study spanned several months , from the resting state of the bitches through pregnancy and into lactation . Clinoptilolite administration was well tolerated in all phases and had positive effects on stool quality, blood parameters (there were fewer stress markers in the blood – which I like best), and nutrient absorption.

★ Can zeolite be used in combination with other supplements or medications?

No. Leave at least two hours in between.
After prolonged medication administration, injections and surgeries, we recommend optimizing the feed with zeolite.

★ From what age is zeolite recommended for dogs?

From puppyhood onwards. Zeolite has a positive effect on food, making nutrients more readily available and providing our sweet pets with trace elements and many natural minerals for bone development. Furthermore, digestion is sometimes unstable, and zeolite rock flour can be very helpful in these cases.

★ Zeolite also suitable for older dogs?

Yes, absolutely. And supplementation is especially important in old age. Dogs need their whiskers and beard hairs for better sensory perception. These vibrissae fall out regularly and always grow back. It's a bit different in old age. They may not grow back as quickly. Zeolite supports the coat and hair growth , which is an important factor for older dogs. Whiskers and beard hairs are absolutely essential for a dog's healthy aging.

★ Can zeolite powder be used with wet and dry food ?

Yes, it works with both feeding methods. It's easy to mix into wet food, and it works with dry food too. Just mix it together and put a bowl of water next to it.

★ What should be considered regarding the quality of zeolite for dogs?

It is important to pay attention to quality when choosing zeolite for dogs. The following factors should be considered:

  1. Purity: It is important that the zeolite is free of impurities and pollutants.
  2. Origin: It is recommended to buy zeolite from trusted manufacturers who source their zeolite from traceable sources and know the mining site. Not all mining sites have the composition that zeolite must have to be effective as a feed improver.
  3. Processing: The quality of zeolite can be influenced by the way it is processed. It is important that the zeolite is processed carefully to maintain its effectiveness. Tribomechanical pulverization is therefore important, as this breaks up the cavities rather than crushing them. This creates space for the pollutants that are to be bound.
  4. Particle size: It is important that the zeolite particles are the right size to effectively bind pollutants. A medium particle size of 14 microns is therefore perfect for dogs.

★ How can zeolite be used externally on dogs?

  1. Zeolite powder can be used as a dry shampoo by applying it to the coat and massaging it in. It helps to remove pollutants and impurities from the coat.
  2. As zeolite gel: Zeolite gel can be used as a skincare product by applying it to the affected area. It can help relieve pain and inflammation and speed up wound healing. Add zeolite powder to aloe vera gel and stir it in gently. This is how you create your own suspension.

  3. As a zeolite solution: Zeolite solution can be used as a rinse by rubbing it into the coat after washing. It helps remove pollutants and impurities from the coat. And, most importantly, this zeolite rinse removes many odors that have accumulated in the coat. You can find instructions for DIY coat sprays in the article: Shedding in dogs - tips for less hair and a healthy coat.
  4. As a zeolite ointment : apply this ointment to wounds, for example, the areas where dogs like to lie and where their fur falls out. Gently massage it in to stimulate the skin and encourage new fur growth.

★ How do you dose zeolite correctly for dogs? Zeolite dosage - How much zeolite for dogs?

STEINKRAFT Zeolite for dogs is particularly economical and effective due to its fine pulverization. Dosage instructions: 5 kg body weight: 1-2 g zeolite added to food; 10 kg body weight: 2-3 g zeolite added; 20 kg body weight: 3-5 g added.

AGES, the Austrian feed authority, stipulates that the percentage should not exceed 1%.

So, if your dog weighs 5kg, he probably eats between 200-400g, depending. Then you add 1-2g to his dog food.

If your dog eats 400-600g, then you can optimize the dog food by adding 2-3g.

If you feed 600-1000g – that's what our dog gets; he weighs 24kg and eats 800g (plus some treats) and just under half a large scoop of zeolite daily. (Up to the line in the middle of the large scoop from the 450g tub, it's less than 5g, and that costs 27 cents a day).

If your dog eats between 1kg and 1.5kg, then you can add at least 5-7g to the food.

Zeolite for Dogs Blog: Dosage and Application for Diarrhea

Our 250g container includes a small measuring spoon. It holds 3g when level. This daily dose of zeolite costs 17 cents, or €0.17.
The large 450g can has a larger measuring spoon: it holds approximately 9g. It has a line in the middle, so you can easily measure out half.

PLEASE NOTE : Other zeolite products on the market are coarser and therefore require a higher dosage. DOGKRAFT Zeolite for dogs has a medium particle size of 14 microns. This gives it a particularly large effective surface area . As a result, you can use a smaller amount, which is more sustainable. This means you need less, save money, and help to use the Earth's resources responsibly.

★ How long should you give zeolite to a dog or supplement its diet?

Either as a 6-8 week course twice a year. Spring and autumn, when the coat changes, a detox or cleansing course can be very supportive of the organism.
Or optimize the feed daily with zeolite. As a preventative measure and for wellness. And to relieve the detoxification organs. Our dog gets the powder daily. He gets delicious wet food – he loves it – from a tin can, so I want to enrich the dog food daily with zeolite, which binds toxins.

★ Does zeolite help with diarrhea ?

Zeolite in dogs: Diarrhea Knowledge article

Yes, absolutely. You have to imagine zeolite as a very effective rock sponge, with many cavities that bind toxins in the intestines. This soothes digestion.

Zeolite can be a very effective and natural aid in the treatment of diarrhea in dogs. It works by adsorbing toxins, regulating pH levels, strengthening the intestinal barrier, binding water, and promoting the healing of intestinal irritations.

★ What are alternatives to zeolite for dogs?

There are a number of alternatives, but they aren't really alternatives to zeolite for our four-legged friends. The following substances can be used in addition to zeolite to improve well-being and digestion:

  1. Probiotics: Probiotics are microbial organisms that support the health of the intestinal tract and can help remove harmful substances and toxins from the gut. Actually, they transform them.
  2. Enzymes: Enzymes are proteins that accelerate certain chemical reactions in the body. They can help improve digestion and remove harmful substances and toxins from the intestines.
  3. Dietary fiber: Dietary fiber consists of plant fibers that can help improve digestion and remove harmful substances and toxins from the intestines.
  4. Vegetable oils: Vegetable oils, such as linseed oil, can help improve digestion and remove harmful substances and toxins from the intestines.

"I tried zeolite for my dog a few months ago because I'd heard it could help improve digestion and remove toxins and waste products from the intestines. I have to say I'm really impressed with the results! Since we started adding zeolite to his food once a day, his coat has felt much shinier and healthier , and he's had fewer problems with diarrhea. I would definitely recommend trying it if you want to do something good for your dog." *****
Elisabeth K.

★ Use of zeolite in older dogs

Zeolite can also be used as a dietary supplement for older dogs to support their well-being and alleviate potential problems. Here are a few examples of how zeolite could be used for older dogs:

  1. Digestive Support : As dogs age, they can experience digestive issues such as constipation or diarrhea. Their intestines may not function as smoothly, and the intestinal lining can become contaminated with toxins. Zeolite can help improve digestion and remove toxins and harmful substances from the intestines – all in a completely natural way. Simply add it to their food!

  2. Relief from pain and inflammation : Zeolite can also help relieve pain and inflammation by improving blood circulation and accelerating wound healing.
  3. Improving kidney function : Zeolite can also help improve kidney function in older dogs by removing harmful substances and toxins from the intestines and regulating pH levels.
  4. Supporting whisker growth: Zeolite stimulates coat health and thus hair growth. Older dogs need their fine whiskers even more, and therefore their regrowth must be encouraged. Zeolite does this.

★ What exactly does zeolite bind in the dog's body?

Zeolite is a natural mineral known for its ability to bind and remove harmful substances and toxins from the intestines. It can bind heavy metals, mycotoxins, and other toxins ingested through food, as well as waste products and toxins produced by bacteria in the gut.

These are referred to as sorption series . These can, of course, vary and depend on several factors (pH value, origin, particle size and grinding of the zeolite, number of ions in the intestine, etc.).

In principle, the following sorption series can be assumed for zeolite from our mining site (Eastern Slovakia - Prof. Karl Hecht recommends this mining site because of the optimal composition of the natural zeolite):

Mercury, ammonium, lead, histamine, aluminum, benzidine, cesium.

If zeolite binds substances, aren't the important vitamins, nutrients , and everything else in the feed also bound along with it and transported away before being absorbed by the body? - A. recently asked us this question. It's also one of the most frequently asked questions. Completely understandable!

Our answer is: no, vitamins and nutrients are not bound because they are far too large and cannot remain attached to the docking points. The same applies to proteins.

Here are a few colloquial synonyms for zeolite - as zeolite is sometimes also called.

  1. Clinoptilolite ♡✔️
  2. Healing clay
  3. mineral clay
  4. Heavy metal absorber
  5. Toxin scavenger
  6. Detoxifier
  7. Detoxifying agent
  8. rock flour
  9. volcanic mineral

These terms are sometimes used as alternatives to "zeolite." And in some cases, they are something different.

Was ich denn dazu sage.
