Shedding in Dogs - A Challenge for Everyone

STEINKRAFT Zeolite for Dogs in two sizes as good support in autumn

Caring for dogs means being part of their living cycle – an interplay of seasons that connects us with nature. In spring and autumn, when shedding begins, it can sometimes be exhausting to fuss about stray hairs. Yet, it is in these very moments that our love for these wonderful creatures shines through. For behind every hair we vacuum up, there is a dedication to ensuring the well-being of a loyal companion.

It's not just about grooming, but the awareness that we are helping them stay healthy and feel good. Thus, every brush, every bath, and every extra minute we give them becomes an expression of our affection. The rhythm of the year and the small challenges it brings remind us that living with a dog is a dance of life – full of devotion, patience, and unconditional love.

STEINKRAFT Zeolite for Dogs supports shedding - black dog and a lot of dog hair next to it.

To be honest, at Steinkraft, we opted for a short-haired dog because we somehow thought these breeds shed less. Our Labrador Retriever taught us otherwise. Never, ever, would we trade him in for that reason. That goes without saying. But: shedding keeps us busy. The constant scratching irritates dog owners, as do the balder spots, and suddenly dandruff can appear too.

That's why we're putting our thoughts on this topic together.

We wrote this blog post to offer support to dog owners during this shedding period, which can often be a challenging time.

For many dogs, it's a natural but sometimes strenuous phase, and for us as owners, it can quickly become a test of patience when hair ends up everywhere. With this article, we want to create a helpful reminder that shedding is more than just a hairy affair – it's part of the life cycle of our beloved four-legged friends. Just like we put away summer clothes and store winter clothes.

With the right grooming tips and a little patience, this process can be navigated more stress-free and healthily. This way, living together not only becomes easier but also more beautiful for both sides! That's how we see it.

What symptoms can dogs show during shedding?

During shedding, various symptoms can occur in dogs, which are usually normal but sometimes require special attention. Here are some of the most common symptoms:

1. Increased hair loss
The most obvious symptom during shedding is increased hair loss. You will likely notice more dog hair on furniture, clothing, and floors.

2. Dry or flaky skin
Some dogs may experience dry skin during shedding, which manifests as flaking or mild itching.

3. Itching and scratching
Due to the shedding of old hair and the growth of new fur, your dog may experience increased itching, leading to frequent scratching. However, this should not be too intense – a vet visit is advisable for severe itching.

4. Bald patches
It can happen that the fur falls out unevenly in some areas, leading to bald patches. As long as these are not too large or accompanied by skin problems, this is normal. However, for noticeable spots, you should consult a veterinarian.

5. Dull or lackluster coat
During shedding, the coat may temporarily appear dull and less shiny, as new fur is still growing and old fur is being shed.

6. Increased licking or biting
If dogs experience itching, they may also start to lick or bite certain areas of their body more frequently. Make sure this does not become excessive to avoid skin injuries.

7. Skin redness or irritation
In rare cases, dogs may develop skin irritation or redness during shedding, especially if they have sensitive skin or allergic reactions.

8. Fatigue or discomfort
Some dogs may feel a bit tired or uncomfortable during shedding, as the body needs energy for the growth of new fur. However, if lethargy or loss of appetite occurs, you should consult a veterinarian.

Are there home remedies that can support our dogs during shedding?

Shedding is a significant metabolic process for our beloved pets. Supporting them during this time is a given.

Yes, there are various home remedies that can naturally support your dog's shedding process. These remedies not only promote coat health but also overall skin health.

Here are some proven tips:

1. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an excellent home remedy to keep your dog's coat and skin healthy. It contains lauric acid, which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and can relieve itching. You can mix a small amount of coconut oil into their food or apply it directly to the skin and gently massage it in to soothe dry and flaky areas.

2. Olive Oil or Linseed Oil

These oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for healthy skin and a shiny coat. You can mix a teaspoon of olive or linseed oil into your dog's food daily to support shedding and moisturize the skin.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can help dogs suffering from dry skin or skin irritations during shedding. You can use a diluted mixture of apple cider vinegar (1 part apple cider vinegar, 3 parts water) and spray it onto your dog's skin or gently rub it in. Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can relieve skin problems.

4. Brewer's Yeast

Brewer's yeast is a popular dietary supplement rich in B vitamins, such as biotin, and also contains zinc. These nutrients promote hair growth and contribute to overall coat health. You can mix a small amount of brewer's yeast into the food to accelerate shedding and reduce hair loss.

5. Egg

Raw or cooked eggs are a great source of protein needed for healthy hair growth. You can give your dog a raw or lightly cooked egg once or twice a week to support coat growth. Eggs also contain biotin, which is essential for coat health.

6. Oatmeal Bath

If your dog suffers from itching or skin irritations during shedding, an oatmeal bath can be soothing. Oatmeal contains anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties. You can add finely ground oatmeal to bath water and bathe your dog in it to soothe the skin and relieve itching.

Application tip for the oatmeal bath:
An oatmeal bath for dogs is a gentle and natural method to relieve itching and skin irritations, especially during shedding. Here's a simple guide on how to prepare an oatmeal bath for your dog:

What you need:
- Untreated oatmeal (preferably without additives)
- Blender or food processor
- Bathtub or a large basin
- Towel for drying

Here's how:
1. Prepare the oatmeal:
Put about one cup (for small dogs) to two cups (for large dogs) of oatmeal into a blender or food processor and grind it into a fine powder. You'll know it's fine enough when it dissolves easily in warm water.

2. Prepare the bath water:
Fill the bathtub with warm, but not hot, water. The water temperature should be comfortable for your dog.

3. Add oatmeal to the water:
Sprinkle the ground oatmeal powder evenly into the water and stir until the water has a milky consistency. The oatmeal will dissolve and release soothing ingredients.

4. Place the dog in the bath:
Gently place your dog in the water. Gently massage the oatmeal water into its fur and skin, especially on itchy or dry areas. Make sure the fur is thoroughly soaked.

5. Let it soak:
Let your dog stay in the oatmeal bath for about 10–15 minutes. This gives the soothing properties of the oatmeal time to work on the skin.

6. Rinse (optional):
After the bath, you can either rinse the dog with clear, lukewarm water or leave the oatmeal water on the skin, as it will continue to have a soothing effect after drying.

7. Dry:
Gently pat your dog dry with a towel, without rubbing too vigorously, to avoid irritating the skin. Let it air dry afterwards, if possible.

Benefits of an oatmeal bath:

Relieves itching and skin irritations: Oatmeal has soothing and moisturizing properties that calm irritated or dry skin.

Natural and gentle: Unlike chemical products, an oatmeal bath is a gentle and natural solution for dogs with sensitive skin.

Supports shedding: It can help remove dead skin flakes during shedding and make the shedding process more comfortable.

The oatmeal bath is easy to perform and offers your dog soothing relief, especially during periods when their fur is itchy or their skin is dry.

To further enhance the effect of the oatmeal bath, you can add a teaspoon of zeolite powder to the bath water or oatmeal mixture. Zeolite is a natural mineral that not only binds toxins but also helps with inflammation. Many scientific studies have demonstrated the healing power of zeolite on the skin, as it can alleviate inflammation and regenerate the skin. In combination with oatmeal, it supports the detoxification of your dog's skin and relieves itching and skin irritations. This mixture helps keep the skin healthy during shedding and promotes the shiny, strong regrowth of the coat. Make sure to distribute the zeolite powder well in the water so that it can work evenly.

7. Carrots

Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which is important for skin health. You can regularly give your dog carrot pieces or carrot juice as a healthy snack. Vitamin A not only promotes coat growth but also strengthens the skin barrier.

8. Burdock Root

Burdock root has skin-cleansing properties and is traditionally used to support skin problems. You can prepare a tea from dried burdock roots and give your dog a small amount mixed with their food. If you are unsure, always consult a naturopath or veterinarian.

9. Quark/Curd or Yogurt

Quark (in Austria, we call it "Topfen") and natural yogurt contain probiotic bacteria that can promote digestion and strengthen the immune system. A healthy immune system also has a positive effect on skin and coat. Feed your dog small amounts regularly to promote its gut health, which in turn positively impacts shedding. You might also consider using organic quality and sheep's yogurt.

10. Chamomile Tea

If your dog suffers from irritated skin or mild itching, you can use chamomile tea to soothe the affected areas. A cool chamomile tea infusion can be applied to the skin to relieve inflammation and irritation.

11. Zeolite - Clinoptilolite

Zeolite is a natural mineral known to bind and excrete toxins from the body. Since skin health often starts in the gut, zeolite can cleanse the digestive tract and support your dog's immune system. By detoxifying the body, skin problems caused by internal stressors can be alleviated.

Which dog breeds are particularly affected by shedding?

Shedding particularly affects dogs with double coats and dense undercoats. These breeds shed their insulating undercoat twice a year – in spring, when they shed their winter coat, and in autumn, when they replace their summer coat with a denser winter coat. Here are some dog breeds that are heavily affected by shedding:

1. Alaskan Malamute
Strong double coat that sheds large amounts of fur, especially in spring.

2. Siberian Husky
Thick undercoat that is regularly shed, especially when transitioning from winter to summer.

3. German Shepherd
A dense undercoat that sheds particularly intensely during shedding season.

4. Golden Retriever
Long-haired dog with a double coat that requires a lot of grooming during shedding.

5. Labrador Retriever
Short-haired, but with a dense undercoat that sheds heavily, especially in spring.
(We at Steinkraft can tell you a thing or two about it. But between us, we should brush Ezra more often.)

6. Akita
Has a thick, insulating undercoat that sheds seasonally and can shed heavily.

7. Saint Bernard
Very thick coat with heavy undercoat that sheds heavily, especially in spring.

8. Newfoundland
Heavy, waterproof undercoat that requires a lot of grooming during shedding.

9. Collie
Long, fluffy coat with dense undercoat that needs regular thorough brushing.

10. Samoyed
Its luxuriant, thick undercoat causes very heavy shedding in spring.

These breeds require particularly intensive grooming during shedding, such as frequent brushing to remove loose undercoat and prevent matting.

STEINKRAFT Zeolite for dogs - brush a lot during shedding

When do dogs shed?

Dogs typically shed twice a year, which is seasonal. The exact months can vary depending on climate, dog breed, and lifestyle, but generally, shedding occurs in the following months:

1. Spring Shedding (March to May):

In spring, usually between March and May, dogs shed their dense winter coat to prepare for warmer months. During this time, the thick, insulating coat is replaced by a lighter summer coat.

2. Autumn Shedding (September to November):

In autumn, from September to November, dogs prepare for winter by shedding their thin summer coat and growing a denser, warming winter coat.

EXCEPTIONS:

Dogs that primarily live indoors and are less exposed to natural light and temperature changes may experience less pronounced or even continuous shedding.

Some breeds, especially those with little or no undercoat (like Poodles or Maltese), have a less pronounced seasonal shedding and tend to shed their coat more evenly throughout the year.

The exact duration and intensity of shedding can also depend on the breed and individual factors.

What can you do if your dog sheds a lot?

If your dog sheds a lot, there are several measures you can take to reduce hair loss and keep your dog's coat healthy:

STEINKRAFT Zeolite for dogs - dog love - support shedding in dogs with zeolite

1. Regular Brushing

Daily brushing is the most effective way to remove loose hair before it spreads around the house. For dogs with an undercoat, special de-matting and undercoat brushes are helpful. Regular brushing also promotes blood circulation and the growth of healthy fur.

2. Proper Nutrition

A balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals promotes skin and coat health. You can use special supplements like fish oil or flaxseed oil, which make the coat stronger and shinier and reduce hair loss.

3. More Frequent Bathing, but Not Too Often

Regular bathing with a mild, dog-friendly shampoo can help remove loose hair. Be careful not to use shampoo too often, as frequent bathing can dry out the skin, leading to even more hair loss. A homemade DIY oatmeal-with-zeolite shampoo can help soothe the skin. We have already described our application idea above.

4. Coat Care Products

There are special care products such as coat sprays or conditioners that nourish the coat and moisturize the skin. These products can help keep the coat healthy and supple and reduce hair loss.

DIY Idea for making your own coat spray:

Yes, here's a simple and natural recipe for making your own coat spray with zeolite. This spray helps to care for your dog's coat during shedding, soothe skin irritations, and keep the coat healthy and shiny.

DIY Coat Spray with DOGKRAFT Zeolite for Dogs during Shedding

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon zeolite powder
  • 250 ml distilled water (alternatively, boiled water)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (optional for extra shine and moisture)
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar (antibacterial and ensures a healthy pH for the skin)
  • A few drops of lavender oil (optional, soothes the skin and provides a pleasant scent)
  • A spray bottle

Preparation:

1. Mix zeolite and water:
Add 1 teaspoon of zeolite powder to 250 ml of distilled water. Stir or shake well until the powder is evenly distributed.

2. Add coconut oil:
If desired, add 1 tablespoon of melted coconut oil to further condition the coat and add shine. Coconut oil is also good for the skin and protects against dryness.

3. Add apple cider vinegar:
Add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is antibacterial and can help soothe skin irritations. It also helps stabilize the skin's pH.

4. Essential oil (optional):
For a pleasant scent and calming effect, you can add 2–3 drops of essential lavender oil. However, this is optional and should only be used in small amounts, as dogs can be sensitive to essential oils.

5. Mix everything well:
Shake the mixture well so that all ingredients are evenly distributed. Then pour it into a spray bottle.

Application:

Before each use, shake the bottle well so that the zeolite powder mixes well and doesn't settle.

Lightly spray the zeolite mixture onto your dog's coat, especially on areas prone to itching or skin irritations.

Gently massage this zeolite mixture into the coat and skin.

This coat spray naturally cares for your dog's coat and supports the skin during shedding. It can be used regularly to keep the coat fresh, shiny, and healthy.

Blog post: Active Microorganisms for Dogs

TIP: We also add microorganisms to the coat spray. They eliminate odors and encourage all less beneficial microorganisms to become supportive. And it works. For a quick fix: add a shot of active microorganisms and half a teaspoon of zeolite to the spray bottle and spray.

5. Sufficient Exercise and Outdoor Access

Regular exercise and fresh air promote the dog's overall health and can support shedding. A fit dog usually has a healthier coat. I know, that's obvious.

6. Hydration

Make sure your dog drinks enough water.

Adequate hydration is important for skin health, and dry skin can lead to increased hair loss.

7. Reduce Stress

Stress can also increase hair loss in dogs.

Ensure a calm and stress-free environment to help your dog relax. Anxious or nervous dogs can be supported with sedatives or behavioral training.

8. Vet visit

If hair loss is extreme or accompanied by symptoms such as itching, skin redness, or bald patches, you should consult a vet or naturopath. Hair loss can be caused by health problems such as allergies, hormonal imbalances, parasites (like fleas), or skin diseases.

9. Supplements

Supplement their food with brewer's yeast, zeolite, or fish oil, which contain important nutrients for the coat. These supplements provide valuable vitamins and minerals that can reduce hair loss and strengthen the coat.

10. Add Zeolite to their feed

Shedding without stress? Zeolite helps our dogs from within.

Zeolite in feed can bind toxins, helping your dog to detoxify their body and absorb important minerals like silicon, which strengthen the coat and minimize hair loss.

So, to summarize:

If your dog sheds heavily, a combination of regular grooming, a healthy diet, and possibly the support of special grooming products or supplements is key. Observe the intensity of the hair loss and do not hesitate to consult a vet if you notice any unusual signs.

How often should you brush your dog during shedding?

During shedding, you should brush your dog daily to effectively remove loose hair and support the shedding process. Daily brushing not only helps reduce the amount of loose hair around the house but also promotes blood circulation and stimulates the growth of new fur.

The frequency of brushing also depends on your dog's coat type:

Long-haired dogs with dense undercoat (e.g., Golden Retriever, Husky): Daily brushing is ideal to prevent matting and remove loose undercoat.

Short-haired dogs (e.g., Boxer, Dalmatian): Daily brushing can also help remove dead hair, although hair loss is often less intense.

Double-coated dogs (e.g., German Shepherds, Akitas): Especially during shedding, these dogs should be brushed daily to detangle the dense undercoat and remove shed hair.

Regular brushing ensures healthy coat development and prevents loose hair from spreading around the house.

The duration depends on breed, age, hormonal status, and general health. Generally, shedding lasts several weeks, and for long-haired dogs, it can extend significantly longer.

❓3. Can I support my dog during shedding?

Yes! Regular brushing, an adapted diet with high-quality nutrients, and additional support from natural remedies like zeolite can relieve skin and coat and facilitate shedding.

❓4. What are typical signs of shedding?

Increased hair loss, loose undercoat, itching, or dull fur are typical accompanying symptoms. Some dogs may also appear more tired or prone to skin irritations during this time.

❓5. Is shedding in dogs also hormonally induced?

Yes, especially in unspayed dogs, shedding is influenced by the hormonal cycle. Heat or castration can also change coat behavior.
