A myth is not a lie. This is important to understand.
A myth usually arises from a real core - an observation, an experience, a simplification that at some point went too far. It is retold because it feels good or because it sounds simple. And eventually, almost everyone believes it - without anyone having asked if it's really true.
Myths about natural products are particularly persistent. Because the longing for simple answers is great. Because nature is complex and we want to put it into clear sentences. And because some providers deliberately exploit this longing - with terms that sound trustworthy, but are empty of content.
Zeolite has fascinated us for years. And that's precisely why it annoys me when I read what some providers write about it - or what is presented as fact in forums, on social media and in well-intentioned guides and also by zeolite dealers, even though it is simply not true.
Debunking myths is not criticism. It is respect - for the mineral, for the people who buy it, and for nature which needs no exaggeration to impress.
Zeolite is an extraordinary natural mineral with real, proven properties. It needs no false promises. It needs no terms that promise more than they can deliver. It just needs clarity.
Here are the myths I encounter most often - and what's really behind them.
Myth 1: "Zeolite is a miracle cure."
This is the myth that worries me most - not because it's ill-intentioned, but because it achieves the opposite of what zeolite deserves: trust.
Zeolite is not a panacea. It doesn't solve problems on its own. A sick soil won't get healthy by sprinkling zeolite on it - if the basic conditions aren't right. A weakened animal won't get strong because there's zeolite in its food - if the husbandry is the problem.
Zeolite is a structural improver. It creates better conditions - for soils, for animals, for skin. That's remarkable enough. It doesn't need superlatives. And besides, it has nothing to do with miracles. Meanwhile, there is enough scientific material. I get an average of 2 new studies on zeolite in my inbox every week.
Myth 2: "Organic zeolite is better than normal zeolite."
Organic zeolite doesn't exist. Period.
A product can only be organic if there is also a non-organic version of that product. Zeolite is stone. Stone cannot be organic. Only natural.
If "organic zeolite" is written somewhere - please question it. It's either a misunderstanding or conscious marketing. Neither is a good sign for the care with which the product is made. Such statements are said to have annoyed Prof. Dr. Hecht the most.
Myth 3: "All zeolites are the same."
There are over 40 naturally occurring zeolite types (called heulandite, chabazite, mordenite, natrolite, phillipsite) - plus synthetically produced variants. They differ fundamentally in their structure, properties, and suitability for various applications.
For biological applications in humans, animals, and soil, only clinoptilolite zeolite is relevant. There are already two forms here, those of sedimentary origin and those of volcanic origin. And even within the sedimentary form there are differences: each deposit yields a mineral with a slightly different composition, different selectivity, and different cation exchange capacity.
Origin, extraction quality, and processing or grinding are crucial - and no product is like the other.
Myth 4: "100% clinoptilolite zeolite means the mineral consists of 100% clinoptilolite."
No - and I often encounter this confusion. "100% clinoptilolite zeolite" is a designation for the mineral type. A product bearing this designation comes exclusively from the clinoptilolite type - in contrast to synthetic or mixed zeolites.
However, this does not mean that the mineral consists of 100% pure clinoptilolite. In nature, clinoptilolite zeolite always contains other minerals and accompanying substances. Clinoptilolite zeolite is the name of this type, in which clinoptilolite is the highest component. A clinoptilolite content of at least 85% is considered high-quality and is approved in the EU as a feed additive - this is the relevant quality standard.
But what should really make you pay attention: Some products on the market are mixed with calcite, herbs or other rock flours - without this being transparently communicated. This significantly reduces the actual clinoptilolite content, without it being immediately apparent. A product consisting of 50% zeolite and 50% calcite has a completely different effect than pure clinoptilolite zeolite.
Therefore: Always ask for the exact composition. And for the clinoptilolite content in percent - not just the product name.
Myth 5: "Zeolite raw material from Germany/Austria/Switzerland - that exists."
Here, an important distinction is necessary – between raw material origin and processing.
The raw material clinoptilolite does not come from German-speaking countries. There are no economically viable clinoptilolite deposits in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. The most important deposits are located in Eastern Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, Norway, Cuba, and Iran. If anyone claims their clinoptilolite raw material comes from Austria or Germany – please ask specifically where exactly. This is geologically impossible.
Made in Austria means something different at STEINKRAFT: The raw material from Eastern Slovakia is refined, ground, quality-controlled, and filled in Austria using the tribo-mechanical AIR2AIR process. This processing step takes place in Austria – and it is crucial for the quality of the end product. No metal contact, no contamination, the crystal structure remains completely intact.
Raw material origin and processing are two different things. Those who communicate both clearly are acting transparently. Those who only name one leave questions open.
Myth 6: "Zeolite is a fertilizer."
Zeolite does not fertilize. It provides little to no nutrients itself.
What zeolite does: It improves the conditions under which nutrients remain available in the soil. It binds ammonium, keeps potassium and magnesium in the root zone, and prevents leaching. It makes fertilizers more efficient - but it does not replace them.
Anyone who stops fertilizing because they use zeolite will be disappointed. Anyone who understands zeolite as a structural soil improver will be amazed.
Myth 7: "The finer, the better - ultrafine is always the right choice."
"Ultrafine" is not a protected term. And finer is not automatically better - it depends, firstly, on what it's for, and secondly, on how it was ground.
For foliar fertilizers and skin care, <8 µm is needed - because leaf pores and skin pores have this size. For the soil, <100 µm is sufficient. For animal feed, 14–35 µm is optimal. So far so good.
But: The finer the zeolite is ground, the more important the question of the grinding process becomes. And here lies a problem that many suppliers do not address.
Conventional ball mills grind with rotating metal balls. This creates metal abrasion - iron, chromium, nickel - which gets directly into the powder. The finer the grinding, the longer the mill runs, the more abrasion is produced. An ultrafine zeolite powder produced with a ball mill is highly likely to have significant metal contamination - which you cannot see, smell, or taste.
The magnet test: Put zeolite in a glass of water, stir, and hold a magnet to the outside of the glass. If a black cloud forms - metal contamination. This product should not be used, neither for animals nor for the skin nor for the soil.

Myth 8: "More zeolite helps more."
An overdose is not dangerous - zeolite is chemically inert and does no harm in normal amounts. But the more common problem is another: too little, not too much.
Many people sprinkle a thin layer of zeolite and are disappointed when nothing happens. Those who use too little see no difference - and draw the wrong conclusion for their soil that zeolite doesn't work.

Myth 9: "Zeolite works immediately."
Sometimes yes - with watering behavior or soil moisture, initial differences are often noticeable after just a few weeks.
But the real strength of zeolite lies in the long term. Soil that is improved with zeolite over years develops a structure, storage capacity, and vitality that is hardly visible after one season, but clearly noticeable after two years.
Zeolite is not a quick fix. It is a structural decision. Those who understand this will not be disappointed.
Myth 10: "Zeolite must be completely renewed every year."
Zeolite is very stable and remains active in the soil for many years. It does not deplete - it becomes part of the soil matrix.
What is sensible: annual smaller supplementary applications, because zeolite can migrate deeper over time through intensive digging. But a complete replenishment every year is neither necessary nor sensible.
A spring refresh with 0.5–1 kg/m² is completely sufficient for most soils.
Myth 11: "Zeolite contains aluminum - this is dangerous for animals and soil."
This is one of the most persistent and at the same time most misunderstood myths surrounding zeolite. It sounds logical at first glance - and is clearly refutable at second glance.
Yes: Aluminum is a structural component of the clinoptilolite crystal lattice. The basic framework of the mineral consists of silicon (SiO₄) and aluminum (AlO₄) - this is chemically correct and cannot be argued away.
What does aluminosilicate mean?
Clinoptilolite is an aluminosilicate - meaning: aluminum (Al) and silicon (Si), together with oxygen (O), form the three-dimensional crystal lattice. Silicon-oxygen tetrahedra (SiO₄) and aluminum-oxygen tetrahedra (AlO₄) are firmly linked by covalent Al-O-Si bonds. These bonds are among the strongest in chemistry - the aluminum is thus a building block of the framework itself, not a free ion. It cannot be dissolved without destroying the entire crystal lattice. This is the fundamental difference to free aluminum, as it occurs in aluminum salts or antacids - and that is why the aluminum in clinoptilolite must be assessed physiologically completely differently.
However, what is crucial is: This aluminum is firmly and permanently bound in the silicate framework by covalent bonds. It is not bioavailable under physiological conditions - meaning: it does not dissolve out, it does not enter the bloodstream, it does not accumulate in the animal's body.
The crystal lattice is immune to stomach acid and other digestive juices. Even if minimal traces of aluminum were to dissolve in an acidic environment - studies show that it does not enter the bloodstream, but is excreted with the feces.
What animal studies show: Clinoptilolite supplementation in animal feed did not show increased aluminum levels in blood or tissues in studies with cattle, pigs, and poultry. Prof. Dr. Karl Hecht also documented no increased aluminum levels in the animal body in long-term observations. Contamination by high-quality clinoptilolite zeolite was not detected in any study.
Even more: The high silicon in zeolite actively reduces the bioavailability of free aluminum. The same silicon that keeps the crystal lattice stable is also considered by researchers to be a natural antagonist of free aluminum in the digestive tract.
High-quality clinoptilolite zeolite does not burden the animal body with aluminum. On the contrary - it can bind free aluminum from the feed and excrete it with the feces.
Myth 12: "Zeolite products are all aluminum-free and safe."
This myth is the flip side of Myth 11 - and just as important.
The aluminum IN the crystal lattice is not a problem - we clarified that earlier. But: Some zeolite products on the market are indeed contaminated with aluminum, lead or other heavy metals. The consumer protection center expressly warns against this and recommends always asking the manufacturer for a current analysis.
Where does this contamination come from? Not from the mineral itself - but from the grinding process. Conventional ball mills grind with rotating metal balls made of iron, chromium and nickel. The longer the grinding, the finer the powder should be, the more metal abrasion gets into the product. This abrasion actually contains metals - in a form that can dissolve.
The irony: The fear of aluminum is directed at the wrong target. The natural aluminum in the crystal lattice is harmless. The real danger can arise from a poor grinding process.
So if you really want to be sure,
you shouldn't ask "Does this zeolite contain aluminum?"
— but "How was this zeolite ground?"

Myth 13: "Zeolite is too expensive — no farmer can afford it."
This myth arises when one only considers the purchase price — and not the overall cost. Anyone who views zeolite as an isolated expense has asked the wrong question. The right question is: What savings does zeolite provide?
In plant production: Normally, only 30–40% of applied nitrogen reaches the plant. The rest is leached or escapes as ammonia into the air — paid for, but lost. Zeolite binds ammonium nitrogen in its crystal lattice and releases it gradually, precisely when the root can absorb it. Studies show: A combination of clinoptilolite and only 75% of the recommended fertilizer amount yielded the same crop as 100% fertilizer alone. Less fertilizer. Same yield.
In animal husbandry: Better feed utilization means less feed required for the same growth. Healthier animals mean lower veterinary costs and less medication use. Zeolite remains on the field as a soil conditioner after slurry application — it pays off a second time.
Zeolite does not deplete. It remains active in the soil and in the cycle for years. The initial investment is an investment in the structure, in the soil's ability to make more of what is already present. The cost question changes entirely when one considers the effect over three seasons, not just the price per kilo.
And for farms that use zeolite in large quantities: Zeolite as a raw material is a comparatively inexpensive mineral — what drives the price is the quality of processing. Those who buy cheap, coarsely and incorrectly ground zeolite save on the purchase but lose on the effectiveness. That is the real cost question.
Myth 14: "The grinding process doesn't matter — zeolite is zeolite."
This is the opposite of the truth — and this myth is particularly detrimental because it leads people to buy cheap, poorly processed zeolite powder, see no effect, and then conclude that zeolite generally doesn't work.
Here's the crucial fact: The most important scientific studies that have shown positive effects of zeolite — that we are aware of — were conducted with tribomechanically activated zeolite (TMAZ). This applies to the research of Prof. Dr. Karl Hecht, to the clinical studies with PMA zeolite, and to plant and animal experiments in agriculture. There are other studies, too — but the basis of knowledge relied upon by the industry comes almost exclusively from TMAZ research. Not from ball mill products.
Why is this so important? In a ball mill, zeolite particles are crushed and squeezed by rotating metal balls. The result: the internal crystal lattices — precisely those voids where adsorption and ion exchange occur — are compressed and their effectiveness is severely limited. The mineral looks like powder, but it does not function like tribomechanically mineralized and activated zeolite.
What tribomechanical activation does differently:
✓ Particles collide in an airflow — no metal contact, no abrasion
✓ Crystal lattices are opened instead of crushed — the active surface area increases enormously
✓ Electrostatic charge is generated — increases adsorption capacity
✓ No metal abrasion in the final product — purity is maintained
✓ Fineness below 8 µm possible — without loss of quality
Tribomechanical activation dates back to Dr. Tihomir Lelas — his invention was the origin of all products known today in agriculture as Megamin, Herbagreen, TMAZ, and others. The same technology. Always without a ball mill.
If someone says "zeolite didn't work for me" — the first question should be: Which grinding method was used? Because a zeolite ground in ball mills, contaminated, and with its crystal lattices crushed is not the same mineral that was used in the studies.
Myth 15: "Zeolite is only suitable for cat litter."
This statement comes from a frequently cited article by the consumer protection center — and it is a good example of how a legitimate warning against exaggerated health claims can lead to a blanket rejection that does not do justice to this mineral.
The consumer protection center's criticism is directed against specific, insufficiently substantiated health claims for internal human consumption — and in some respects, it is quite right: Anyone who promotes zeolite as a miracle cure for cancer or as a universal detox agent is exaggerating.
But to conclude from this that zeolite is "only suitable for cat litter" ignores decades of scientific research and practical application in entirely different areas:
What zeolite demonstrably can do and what it is used for:
✓ Animal feed additive: EU-wide approved as feed additive E568 — regulated, tested, safe
✓ Stable hygiene & slurry: Demonstrably binds ammonia, improves stable air, reduces climate emissions
✓ Agriculture & garden: Improves soil structure, retains nutrients, stores water — scientifically proven many times over
✓ Cosmetics & skincare: Binds pollutants and bacteria on the skin — external application
✓ Industry: Water treatment, lead-free gasoline, road construction
✓ Disaster relief: 22,000 tons used after Chernobyl for decontamination
A mineral that was used as a solution in one of the biggest environmental disasters in history, that is approved EU-wide as an animal feed additive, and that has been used for decades in agriculture worldwide — reducing it to cat litter is factually incorrect.
The legitimate message behind the warning is different: Not every promise about zeolite is proven. Quality and area of application are decisive. And that is precisely the core of everything we discuss in this article.
Myth 16: "Zeolite binds vitamins and proteins in the animal's body."
This concern regularly arises — and it is understandable. Anyone who uses zeolite as a feed additive and knows that the mineral binds pollutants rightly asks themselves: Does it not also bind nutrients?
The answer is no — and the reason lies in the physics of the crystal lattice.
Clinoptilolite zeolite functions like a molecular sieve. Its pores and channels have a precisely defined size — 0.4 to 0.7 nanometers. Only particles that are small enough and positively charged fit inside. These include heavy metal ions such as lead, cadmium, and mercury, ammonium, mycotoxins, and radionuclides.
Vitamins, proteins, and amino acids simply do not fit into the lattice. A protein can be a thousand times larger than a heavy metal ion — it does not fit through the pores. Vitamins and amino acids are also too large and/or not positively charged. They remain in the animal's body and are absorbed by the body. Studies with dogs even showed slightly increased protein and calcium levels in the blood when fed zeolite — an indication of improved nutrient utilization, not loss.
A comparison often made: Even some bentonite manufacturers themselves describe in their product documents that vitamins and trace elements may temporarily bind to the mineral surface — before being released again during the digestive tract. How pronounced this effect is in practice is evaluated differently. With clinoptilolite zeolite, this question does not even arise due to the defined pore size.
Zeolite removes what does not belong in the animal's body. What does belong — nutrients, vitamins, amino acids — it leaves alone. This is not a coincidence. This is the physics of a mineral that formed over millions of years to do precisely that.
Zeolite needs no myths. It is fascinating enough as it is — a mineral that formed over millions of years, that was used in Chernobyl, that Cleopatra knew, and that modern soil science understands better today than ever before.
Myth 17: "Zeolite contains a lot of lead — that's dangerous."
This myth contains a kernel of truth — yet leads in the wrong direction.
Yes: Clinoptilolite zeolite can contain small amounts of lead. This is not surprising — zeolite is a mineral that formed over millions of years in the Earth's crust and absorbed environmental substances in the process. The average lead content of the Earth's crust is approximately 15 ppm. A zeolite that has a high affinity for lead — and this is a quality characteristic — will naturally have bound small amounts of it over millennia.
The crucial point: This lead is firmly bound in the crystal lattice by Van der Waals forces. It cannot be released under physiological conditions. To analytically detect the lead bound in zeolite, aqua regia is needed — a mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid and concentrated nitric acid, one of the strongest acids ever. These conditions do not exist in the digestive tract.
What studies show:
✓ Clinoptilolite supplementation in feed showed no significant increase in lead concentration in blood or tissues
✓ In a clinical study in 2021, subjects taking zeolite absorbed up to 90% less lead than the placebo group — zeolite binds lead and does not release it
✓ High-quality zeolite is tested for heavy metals and must comply with defined limit values
There is even an interesting logic behind it: a zeolite that has no affinity for lead at all cannot bind lead from the body either. Selectivity is both the reason for a certain natural lead content and the reason for the ability to excrete lead.
The real lead danger with zeolite products comes — as with aluminum — not from the mineral itself, but from metal abrasion due to poor grinding methods. Free lead from ball mills is bioavailable. The naturally bound lead in the crystal lattice is not.
Myth 18: "Zeolite always works the same for every animal."
This myth has two faces: Some expect zeolite to work immediately and equally strongly in every animal. Others conclude from a single observation — "it didn't do anything for my animal" — that zeolite generally doesn't work. Both are too simplistic.
Zeolite is not a medication with a fixed dose-response curve. It is a physically acting mineral — and its effect depends on what is present in the animal's body that can be bound. An animal with a high mycotoxin load in its feed will show more pronounced effects than one already kept under optimal conditions. An animal with polluted stable air will benefit more visibly than one in an already well-ventilated stable.
Animal species and digestive system play a role. Horses, cattle, pigs, poultry, and dogs have different digestion times, different stomach pH values, and different transit times. What clearly helps a horse during coat change may work more subtly and slowly in another animal under different conditions.
Zeolite works most effectively when there is something to do: contaminated feed, high pollutant exposure, coat change, stress, diarrhea, poor stable air. The healthier and less burdened an animal already is, the less visible — but no less real — the effect. Prevention is harder to measure than therapy.
Anyone who sees no effect with an inferior product has not proven that zeolite doesn't work — but that this particular product doesn't work. The expectation that a natural mineral will always work the same for every animal under every condition does not correspond to the reality of living systems. And that is not a weakness — that is the nature of natural products.
Myth 19: "The higher the clinoptilolite content, the better."
Prof. Dr. Karl Hecht explicitly denied this — and it is worth understanding why.
What truly matters is not the pure clinoptilolite content, but the ratio of silicon to aluminum in the crystal lattice — the Si:Al ratio. It should be at least 6:1. This ratio determines the stability of the crystal structure, the selectivity of ion exchange, and the actual effectiveness.
Furthermore: Every clinoptilolite deposit has a unique geological composition. A high clinoptilolite content alone says nothing about heavy metal contamination — that depends on the specific geology of the deposit, not the percentage. There are deposits with high clinoptilolite content and very low heavy metal values. There are deposits with high clinoptilolite content and elevated heavy metal values. Both are possible — the percentage alone says nothing about this.
What Prof. Dr. Hecht repeatedly emphasized — the five quality levels:
✓ Si:Al ratio — at least 6:1, determines crystal quality and selectivity
✓ Heavy metal analysis — absolutely necessary regardless of clinoptilolite content
✓ Mining method — careful extraction without cross-contamination, on-site quality control
✓ Transport & storage — closed BigBags instead of bulk goods, seamless control from extraction to filling
✓ Grinding method — tribomechanical instead of ball mill, so the crystal lattice remains intact and no metal abrasion occurs
A high clinoptilolite content on the label is not a quality feature. The overall picture is — Si:Al ratio, heavy metal values, mining standards, transport conditions, and grinding method. Anyone who only states the percentage and conceals the rest is answering the wrong question.
Myth 20: "Zeolite binds water — regardless of particle size."
Yes — and no. Zeolite binds water. That is fundamentally correct. But how much water a zeolite product can bind depends crucially on the particle size. And there are worlds between a fine powder and a coarse granulate.
We see products on the market with grains of 3 mm and more — advertised as water reservoirs for soils, pots, or raised beds. What is not explained is that a 3 mm grain has a vanishingly small outer surface area relative to its volume. Water is primarily bound to surfaces — and most of a zeolite's surface is not external, but internal, in the fine pores and channels of the crystal lattice.
The larger the grain, the less of this internal surface is accessible. A coarse 3 mm zeolite piece therefore binds significantly less water than the same mineral in fine powder form — because the majority of the active structure remains trapped within the grain and is not accessible.
How Grain Size Affects Water Retention:
▪ 3 mm grains: Very small external surface area, internal pores barely accessible → binds little to very little water relative to the amount used
▪ 0.5–1 mm granules (BODENKRAFT PUR): Significantly more surface area, better accessibility of the internal structure → good water retention, ideal for soil and raised beds
▪ Fine powder (<100 µm): Enormous active surface area, maximum accessibility of crystal pores → best water retention per gram of zeolite used
One gram of fine zeolite powder has an internal surface area of several hundred square meters. One gram of 3 mm grains has a fraction of that accessible. So, if you use zeolite for water retention and choose coarse grains, you'll need many times the amount for the same effect — or you might not see any effect at all.
Coarse zeolite is not worthless — but its strength lies in soil structure and aeration, not in maximum water retention. If water retention is your primary goal, you need finer zeolite. If you want both — structure and water retention — it's best to combine both grain sizes.
