Sweet itch in horses is one of the most common and distressing skin conditions in horse husbandry – and for many horse owners, it's a recurring annual problem full of worry, care, and the desire for genuine relief. An estimated 5–10% of all horses in Central Europe are affected, especially Icelandics, Friesians, and Shetland ponies. The cause is an allergic overreaction to the saliva of Culicoides midges – with the well-known consequences: severe itching, rubbing, hair loss, and open sores.
The good news: with the right combination of protection, adapted feeding, and natural accompanying substances such as organic black cumin and zeolite, the midge season can be made significantly more relaxed for many horses – from the inside and out. The challenges that horses and their owners face in summer are well described in the article: Horses in Summer - Heat, Insects & Using Zeolite Correctly.

1. Sweet Itch in Horses – Causes and What's Really Behind It
Sweet itch is a common skin condition that affects many horses. It is an allergic reaction to the saliva of biting midges, particularly Culicoides species. These midges are most common in warm regions and frequently appear during the summer months. The condition causes severe itching, skin redness, swelling, hair loss, and open wounds in affected horses.
Midge bites trigger an allergic reaction in the horse's immune system, leading to inflammation and skin irritation. Some horse breeds, such as Shetland ponies and Icelandic horses, are more susceptible to sweet itch due to genetic predisposition.
In recent years, the use of black cumin and zeolite has emerged as a potential solution for alleviating the symptoms of sweet itch in horses. Black cumin has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, while zeolite can help detoxify the body and support the immune system.
In this blog, we will delve deeper into the use of black cumin and zeolite and explain how they can help reduce the symptoms of sweet itch and improve your horse's well-being. We will also provide tips for preventing sweet itch and share testimonials from horse owners who have successfully used these natural approaches.
Stay tuned to learn more about the benefits and proper application of black cumin and zeolite for treating sweet itch in horses!
2. Sweet Itch in Horses: Causes, Symptoms, and Effects
Sweet itch, also known as summer seasonal recurrent allergic dermatitis or summer dermatitis, is a dermatological condition affecting horses. It is caused by an allergic reaction to the saliva of certain midge species, particularly Culicoides midges. These midges are known for their small, biting stings, which can cause an oversensitive immune response in some horses.

The causes of sweet itch are diverse. Genetic predisposition is believed to play a role, as certain horse breeds are more sensitive to midge bites. Additionally, environmental factors such as high humidity, warm temperatures, and a large number of midges in the environment can increase the risk of sweet itch.
The symptoms of sweet itch are usually unmistakable. The most common include severe itching, skin redness, swelling, hair loss, and the appearance of open wounds. Horses with sweet itch tend to rub themselves excessively, which can lead to further skin injuries. The itching and skin irritation can cause significant discomfort for the horse and even lead to infections if the skin is damaged.
The effects of sweet itch on the horse's well-being can be considerable. In addition to the obvious physical discomfort, sweet itch can also lead to stress, irritability, and behavioral changes. The constant distraction from itching and restlessness can negatively impact the horse's concentration and performance. Therefore, it is important to take effective measures to alleviate the symptoms and improve the horse's quality of life.
In the next section of our blog, we will take a closer look at the potential benefits of black cumin and zeolite in treating sweet itch in horses.
Why the combination of black cumin and zeolite makes sense
Black cumin and zeolite work on different levels – and thus complement each other well.
Black cumin press cake contains essential oils, fatty acids, and the active ingredient thymoquinone. Studies show this has anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects – precisely where sweet itch originates: in the immune system.
Clinoptilolite zeolite acts purely physically in the digestive tract. It binds toxins, mycotoxins, and ammonium before they enter the bloodstream – thereby relieving the body from within. A less burdened organism reacts more calmly to external stimuli such as midge bites.
The combination of both substances in one product has a practical background: many horse owners were already feeding both components in parallel. A joint powder simplifies dosage and ensures that both substances are given daily and in the correct amount.
Important here: organic quality for black cumin is not a marketing argument, but has a specific reason. Pesticide residues in conventionally grown black cumin can themselves trigger allergic reactions – exactly the opposite of the desired effect. This is particularly relevant for sensitive horses with sweet itch.
3. Naturally Treating Sweet Itch in Horses – 5 Proven Methods
In addition to using black cumin and zeolite, there are other natural methods that can help treat sweet itch in horses. Here are a few of them:
1. Dietary Adjustments: Nutrition plays an important role in treating sweet itch. A balanced, nutrient-rich diet can strengthen the immune system and support skin health. It is recommended to choose low-sugar and low-carbohydrate feeds, as increased sugar intake can raise the risk of inflammation and allergies. Adequate provision of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E can also be helpful. It is best to consult a veterinarian or nutrition expert to create a suitable diet for your horse.
2. Skin Care: Good skin care is crucial for alleviating the symptoms of sweet itch. Regular washing of affected areas with mild, hypoallergenic shampoos or special skin care products can help remove dirt and allergens. It is important to thoroughly dry the skin afterwards to prevent moisture buildup. Applying soothing and moisturizing lotions or salves can also help relieve itching. At this point, we recommend the Zeolite Skin Powder with organic lavender.
Easy to use, 100% natural.
3. Insect Protection: Since sweet itch is caused by midge bites, effective insect protection is crucial. Use insect repellents specifically designed for horses to deter midges. Fly sheets with fine mesh can also help prevent midges from getting through. Make sure to regularly clear your stable and pasture of standing water and implement other midge control measures to reduce the midge population. And also start in the stable with bedding with zeolite .

The high-quality feeding lime with zeolite and organic herbs reduces flies and midges even in the stable.
4. Homeopathic or Herbal Remedies: There are various homeopathic or herbal remedies that can help relieve itching and inflammation. These include, for example, aloe vera gel, tea tree oil, or calendula ointment. However, it is important to use such products only after consulting a veterinarian or a natural medicine specialist to ensure they are suitable for your horse and do not cause unwanted side effects.
5. Stress Management: Stress can worsen the symptoms of sweet itch. A stress-free environment and good care can help reduce stress in your horse. Regular exercise, pasture access, social interaction with peers, and a calm stable atmosphere can help improve your horse's well-being.

What is black cumin and how does it affect horses?
Black cumin, also known as Nigella sativa, is a plant native to various parts of the world, especially the Middle East. The seeds of black cumin have been used for many centuries in both cooking and traditional medicine. They are rich in essential oils, proteins, fatty acids, and various other bioactive compounds.
Black cumin oil is often used as a dietary supplement for horses, especially in the treatment of sweet itch. It has a variety of potential health benefits due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-allergic properties.
The anti-inflammatory properties of black cumin can help reduce inflammatory reactions in the skin associated with sweet itch. It can alleviate itching, reduce skin redness and swelling, and help reduce scratching and further skin damage in the horse.
In addition, black cumin oil can also have an immunomodulatory effect by supporting and strengthening the horse's immune system. This can help reduce the immune system's overreaction to mosquito bites and thus alleviate the allergic reactions that cause sweet itch.
It is important to note that while black cumin can be helpful for many horses, individual reactions and results may vary. Therefore, it is advisable to start using black cumin oil in consultation with a veterinarian or animal naturopath and to observe your horse's reactions.

Black cumin keeps mosquitoes away
A remarkable feature of black cumin is its ability to emit a scent that repels mosquitoes. While the oil has a pleasant and spicy smell for us humans, mosquitoes seem to dislike this scent intensely. It's as if black cumin creates a natural barrier that repels these annoying insects. This fragrant shield can be used by horses to protect themselves from the bothersome mosquito bites that cause sweet itch. It's amazing to observe how horses emit a subtle hint of this unique aroma, creating an aura of defense around them. This natural defense against mosquitoes makes black cumin oil a promising solution for horse owners who want to protect their beloved four-legged friends from the tormenting itching and symptoms of sweet itch.
Please note that experiences with the smell of black cumin oil and its effect on mosquitoes can vary individually. It is possible that the smell may be perceived slightly differently from horse to horse. It is recommended to observe your horse's reactions. Steinkraft also offers smaller sample packs. Sweet Itch Horse Experiences – what horse owners report
"For years, I struggled with my mare's sweet itch.
The symptoms were truly tormenting for her – constant rubbing, itching, and inflamed skin. I tried everything imaginable, but nothing seemed to truly help until I discovered Steinkraft and their Black Cumin Zeolite Powder. I was skeptical, but I wanted to leave no stone unturned. So, I started giving my mare a daily portion of black cumin and zeolite. Within a few weeks, I already noticed a significant improvement. Her itching subsided, her skin became calmer, and the inflammations healed. Since then, I've continued the treatment, and my mare's sweet itch is significantly under control. I am so grateful for these natural solutions that provide her with so much relief." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lisa M., Black Cumin Zeolite Powder
"My gelding suffered from sweet itch every year and I was truly desperate.
Conventional treatment methods only brought limited success, and I didn't want to constantly give my horse strong medication. I decided to try natural approaches and came across Steinkraft and their Black Cumin Zeolite Powder. I started giving it to my horse daily with his feed and sprinkled zeolite powder on the affected skin areas. I was amazed by the results! My horse's sweet itch became less intense, and the itching symptoms were significantly reduced. It was a relief to see my horse finally find peace and enjoy the summer months again. I can truly recommend this mixture when it comes to treating sweet itch in horses." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tim B., Black Cumin Zeolite Powder and Tierkraft Zeolite Skin Powder
"After 10 years, the first summer without a blanket
It is every horse owner's goal to do something good for their darlings during the mosquito-plagued summer months. I am one of the proud owners of a Friesian mare, who is known to have major problems with sweet itch. They can only get through the summer blanketed, which is a nuisance and anything but relaxing. Last year, I started a course of treatment with Steinkraft's black cumin zeolite powder with her at the beginning of May, and I can say that for the first time in 10 years, my horse got through the summer without a blanket. It's not that there were no bites at all, but they were manageable, and there were no open sores. It was manageable, and the horse was happy to be a horse throughout the summer. This year, we started with all our horses at the end of April with the black cumin zeolite, combined with the zeolite skin powder from Steinkraft for my Friesian mare, which I applied to her mane crest and tail dock and which has a soothing effect. So from outside and inside. What I also highly recommend is to use the zeolite bedding, because it already curbs midges and flies and everything that flies and crawls in the stable. This is a good all-round package for a happy horse throughout the summer." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tanja E., Black Cumin Zeolite Powder, Tierkraft Zeolite Skin Powder, Horsekraft Bedding
Clearly better coat health.
"Dodo was fed the black cumin zeolite and we noticed a positive effect on his coat. That means his coat is shinier and no longer so dull. The product also helped him super well through the coat change. Especially now from winter to summer. And he doesn't rub himself as much anymore. Therefore, not as many hairs break off his tail anymore. And he got a bit more forelock." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Patricia, Black Cumin Zeolite Powder
Effects of Pesticides in Black Cumin Oil
When choosing black cumin products for our horses, organic quality is of paramount importance. Pesticides and chemical residues in conventionally grown black cumin can trigger allergic reactions and impair the delicate balance of the horse's body. At Steinkraft, we attach great importance to the use of organic black cumin pomace. Organic farming ensures that black cumin is produced without the use of pesticides or other harmful chemicals. This guarantees a pure and unadulterated quality, which is crucial for the health of our horses. With Steinkraft Black Cumin Zeolite Pellets, you can be confident that you are giving your horse a product of the highest quality that is free from pesticide residues and optimally utilizes the natural benefits of black cumin. Choose organic quality and ensure that your horse benefits from the best ingredients - for healthy and allergen-free care.
Naturopaths often tell me about medicinal herbs and so-called superfoods that then trigger allergies in horses. You want to do something good, and the opposite is the case. The pesticides disrupt the harmony of the horse's body, and perhaps it is even a good reaction from the animal, signaling: this is not so good for me, you see that I react allergically to it.
How to dose Steinkraft Black Cumin Zeolite Powder?
The dosage of Steinkraft Black Cumin Zeolite Powder depends on the horse's weight. Generally, it is mixed daily into the horse's normal feed as a supplement. For some horses, it needs to be thoroughly mixed in, while others readily eat it. One thing seems to be very consistent: horses that don't like black cumin oil will readily eat this powder mixture. And that's a blessing.
Our tip: we have small sample buckets (100g) - here you can try it out to see if it meets their taste.
How long does it take to see results when using Steinkraft Black Cumin Zeolite Powder?
Results can vary individually, as each horse is unique. Some horses react quite quickly to the powder and show an improvement in symptoms after just a few weeks. For other horses, it may take a little longer for the positive effects to become visible. It is recommended to administer the powder continuously over a longer period to achieve optimal results. And also to build up a depot in the body. If you haven't detoxed your horse for a long time, then feed zeolite for two months beforehand. Then everything will be more effective.
Can Steinkraft Black Cumin Zeolite Powder be given safely with mineral feed?
Generally, Steinkraft Black Cumin Zeolite Pellets are well-tolerated and can usually be given without problems alongside mineral feed. However, it is recommended to consider the total dosage of supplements and to consult a veterinarian if necessary. Each horse has individual needs, so it is important to consider specific requirements and potential interactions with other supplements.
How long has black cumin been used for horses?
The use of black cumin oil for horses has a long history, dating back centuries. Black cumin oil was already used in traditional medicine in ancient Egypt, Greece, and the Middle East to treat various health problems.
There is no exact information about who specifically discovered black cumin oil for horses, as the use of black cumin oil in veterinary medicine is based on experience and tradition. Over time, horse owners and caregivers have recognized the positive effects of black cumin oil on the health and well-being of their horses and have used it as a natural supplement to support the immune system, skin health, and various ailments.
Today, black cumin oil is used by many horse owners and veterinarians as a natural alternative to support the health and specific needs of horses.
At Steinkraft, we use ORGANIC black cumin pomace to produce HORSEKRAFT Zeolite-Black Cumin Powder. This press cake contains all the valuable ingredients of black cumin, but it no longer contains any oil that could go rancid. We think that's great! And so do many horses.

B. Wasenhof, Black Cumin Zeolite Powder
"My mare runs away if she smells black cumin oil. She won't touch anything that has even a drop in it. That's why I'm so incredibly happy about this powder solution - because she eats it! I didn't know about zeolite, but I informed myself and read up on it and I'm very impressed with Steinkraft. So thank you for this combination, because it helps. She no longer rubs herself, I don't need blanket management anymore, and all that with just a few spoonfuls every day." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Marie-Luise and Anola, Black Cumin Zeolite Powder

FAQ: Sweet Itch in Horses
❓ What is sweet itch in horses? Sweet itch is an allergic skin condition in horses, triggered by the saliva of Culicoides midges. The immune system overreacts to the midge saliva, leading to severe itching, skin redness, hair loss, and rubbing. Icelandics, Friesians, and Shetland ponies are particularly often affected.
❓ When is the best time to start black cumin for sweet itch? Ideally in spring – preferably 4–6 weeks before the midge season begins. This allows a natural depot to build up in the body. Many horse owners start feeding in April and only stop in October.
❓ How long does it take for black cumin-zeolite to work for sweet itch? Results vary individually. Some horses show improvement after just 2–3 weeks, while for others it takes 4–6 weeks until the effect is noticeable. Continuous feeding throughout the midge season is recommended.
❓ Can black cumin and zeolite be given simultaneously with mineral feed? Yes, both products are well tolerated and can generally be given without problems along with mineral feed. If medication is given simultaneously, we recommend a time interval of 2–3 hours.
❓ Which horse breeds are particularly susceptible to sweet itch? Icelandics, Friesians, Shetland ponies, and other pony breeds are particularly often affected. However, warmbloods can also develop sweet itch – genetic predisposition plays a major role.
❓ Does zeolite bedding also help against mosquitoes in the stable? Yes – zeolite bedding binds moisture and ammonia, thereby depriving mosquitoes and flies of their breeding ground. Many horse owners report significantly fewer insects in the stable since using zeolite bedding.
❓ Is organic black cumin important or is conventional sufficient? Organic quality is particularly important for black cumin for horses. Conventionally grown black cumin can contain pesticide residues, which can themselves trigger allergic reactions – exactly the opposite of the desired effect. STEINKRAFT exclusively uses organic black cumin pomace.
Your horse doesn't have to suffer every summer. With the right preparation from spring onwards – black cumin, zeolite, bedding, and skin powder as a holistic package – the midge season can be significantly more relaxed. For horse and human.
