FAQ: 10 reasons to optimize dog food with zeolite and everything you need to know about zeolite for dogs
When should you add zeolite to your dog's food?
- If the dog’s digestion is not in balance and harmony: that is, in case of diarrhea
A food optimized with zeolite can help improve a dog's digestion by removing excess fluids and toxins from the intestines, helping to regulate intestinal pH, thereby preventing the growth of pathogenic bacteria, helping to improve the absorption of nutrients from food by improving intestinal permeability, helping to reduce inflammation in the intestines, and improving overall intestinal health.
TIP: Before you start an intestinal cleansing program for your dog, many veterinarians recommend optimizing the dog food with zeolite to prepare the intestines for the new microbiome by eliminating toxins and preparing the intestinal mucosa.
-
If the dog's skin and coat health can be improved:
A dog food enhanced with zeolite can help improve a dog's coat by removing pollutants and toxins that would otherwise be excreted through the skin. The coat, as an extension of the skin, acts as a large detoxification surface. You can also support your dog during their molt (twice a year).
- It can help reduce the smell of dog urine and feces by removing toxins and excess acids that are responsible for the unpleasant odor.
- When the dog’s immune system needs support:
Zeolite can help strengthen dogs' immune systems by removing harmful substances that weaken the immune system. Simply stir it into their food.
- If the dog is often weak and tired :
It can help improve the performance of dogs by improving the absorption of nutrients from food and keeping the intestines healthy.
It can help improve the overall well-being of dogs by supporting digestion and removing toxins from the body.
- If the dog has been given medication , or has just undergone surgery, or has received vaccinations, or has been dewormed, all of these can lead to the accumulation of heavy metals in the dog's body.
- If the dog lives in the city and walks among the cars and exhaust fumes.
- If your dog's food is contaminated with heavy metals , some studies have shown that zeolite can help remove heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury from dogs' intestines. So add it to your dog's food!
- If the dog food is contaminated with mycotoxins , mycotoxins are produced by mold and make many things difficult. Some dogs also eat things from the ground. Then zeolite definitely belongs in the food. Zeolite binds mycotoxins and expels them from the body.
- If the dog suffers from allergies .

"Because of his long fur, Nils is a predestined tick catcher, so I decided to give him a tick tablet .
Since he does have diarrhea from time to time, I started feeding him zeolite prophylactically a week in advance.
He tolerated the tablet perfectly, and we had his digestion well under control. " *****

FAQ - Frequently asked questions regarding the use of zeolite in dogs
Can zeolite be used on all dogs?
Yes, dog food can be optimized with zeolite for all dog breeds, and for all ages – from puppies to seniors.
How is zeolite administered? How is zeolite used in dogs?
Zeolite is administered in powdered form and can either be mixed directly into the food or stirred into water and mixed with the food. Ensure your dog drinks plenty of fluids when administering zeolite. Our dog sometimes drinks water with a splash of sheep's milk more appreciatively. And he drinks more of it, too.
If your dog is taking medication, leave 2 hours between zeolite and medication administration.
How can I use zeolite on dry food?
With wet food, it's easy to use. Just mix it in. That's also the original idea behind zeolite for feed optimization. Mix it in homogeneously. Our experience with dry food: when the bag is freshly opened, the food is still slightly moist. That's probably the wrong term for it.

What I mean is, the zeolite powder sticks well. That is, just pour it over and turn the food over gently. So that it doesn't scare the dog like sugar on top. I've also heard of customers who stir it into sheep's milk yogurt and pour it over the dry food. We did that too, after Ezra, our Labrador Retriever, had an operation and was given a lot of medication. It was basically a convalescence and detoxification treatment afterwards. My mother gives her dog a special raw meal once a week, minced, and she mixes it in. Bakku thinks that's wonderful, of course. And now Winnie. Winnie is a divorce orphan and has now found the perfect home with Grandma and Grandpa. She came quite anxious and had a lot of dandruff. We brought them a large container straight away, and Winnie ate the zeolite powder without a problem.
How long does it take for zeolite to work?
The effect of zeolite can vary and depends on several factors, such as the dog's size and health, and the amount of toxins to be removed. Typically, an improvement in digestion should be observed within a few days, while the removal of toxins may take somewhat longer.
It's important to administer zeolite regularly and follow the recommended dosages for best results. Persevere. Sometimes we read: I've been feeding him zeolite for three days now and he's still scratching... or something like that.
Bakku, my parents' dog, gets (or rather, I should say got) zeolite every now and then. Every two weeks, he's mixed into minced meat. The next day, he's always much more energetic and jumping around like a baby. According to his mom.
Can zeolite help treat certain health problems in dogs?
Zeolite can help treat certain health problems in dogs, particularly digestive issues and diarrhea . It can help regulate intestinal pH, remove excess fluids and toxins from the intestines, and improve overall intestinal health. It can also help improve nutrient absorption from food and reduce inflammation in the intestines. However, it's important to note that zeolite is used to optimize the feed. This means it must be mixed thoroughly and evenly into the feed.
Can zeolite help with diarrhea in dogs?
Yes, absolutely. Zeolite leads to improved intestinal health and also improved stool quality. Studies have proven it.
The study by Januškevičius et al. (2013) , published in Veterinarija ir Zootechnika (64(86):3–10), investigated the effects of clinoptilolite zeolite as a feed additive in adult dogs. The aim was to evaluate the effects on digestion, fecal quality , and certain blood parameters .
Results:
-
Stool quality: Dogs in the zeolite group showed a significant improvement in stool consistency, with a reduction in moisture content, indicating better intestinal function.
-
Blood parameters: Positive changes in blood parameters were observed, including an increase in total protein content and lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels compared to the control group.
-
Nutrient utilization: The intake of dry matter from the feed was improved in the zeolite group, indicating more efficient nutrient utilization.
These results suggest that supplementing dog food with clinoptilolite zeolite may have positive effects on digestive health and certain metabolic parameters. As you can see, this study suggests that zeolite could serve as a natural food additive to support intestinal function and overall health in dogs.
So in summary: The addition of Clinoptilolite zeolite in dog food led to a significant improvement in intestinal health and a reduction in the moisture content of the feces. This also improved fecal quality, which is particularly beneficial for indoor animal husbandry.

Are there any side effects when using zeolite in dogs ?
Generally, side effects from using zeolite in dogs are very rare. However, it's important to follow the recommended dosages and ensure your dog is adequately hydrated when administering zeolite. Due to its ability to remove toxins from the intestines, diarrhea or vomiting may sometimes occur during the first few days of use while the body adjusts to the zeolite powder. In some dogs, the volume of excretion increases. The intestines simply begin to empty more. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, or if your dog exhibits other unusual symptoms, you should consult a veterinarian immediately. But that's pretty much par for the course.
In this study Januškevičius et al. (2013), Veterinarija ir Zootechnika 64(86):3-10 also clearly demonstrated that zeolite can be given to dogs, in this case 10 German shepherd bitches (2-4 years old) without any concerns. The study spanned several months , from the bitches' resting state through pregnancy and into the lactation phase . During all phases, clinoptilolite administration was well tolerated and had positive effects on stool quality, blood parameters (fewer stress markers were found in the blood—that's what I like best), and nutrient intake.
Can zeolite be used in combination with other supplements or medications?
No. Leave at least two hours between each.
After prolonged medication administration, injections and operations, we recommend optimizing the feed with zeolite.
At what age is zeolite recommended for dogs?
From puppyhood onward, zeolite has a positive effect on the food, making nutrients more readily available and providing our darlings with trace elements and many natural minerals for bone development. Furthermore, digestion can sometimes be unstable, and zeolite rock flour can be a great help in this case.
Is zeolite also suitable for older dogs?
Yes, absolutely. And as dogs age, supplementing with zeolite is also very important. Dogs need their whiskers and beard hair for better sensory perception. These whiskers shed regularly and then grow back again. Things are a little different with age. It may be that some of them don't grow back as quickly. Zeolite positively supports the coat and hair growth , which is an important factor for dogs as they age. Whiskers and beard hair are absolutely essential for dogs to age happily.
Can zeolite powder be used in wet and dry food ?
Yes, with both feeding methods. It's easy to mix into wet food, and it works with dry food too. Simply mix and place a bowl of water next to it.
What should you consider when it comes to the quality of zeolite for dogs?
It's important to pay attention to quality when choosing zeolite for dogs. The following factors should be considered:
- Purity: It is important that the zeolite is free from impurities and pollutants.
- Origin: It is recommended to purchase zeolite from trustworthy manufacturers who source their zeolite from traceable sources and who know the mining site. Not all mining sites have the required composition for zeolite as a feed optimizer.
- Processing: The quality of the zeolite can be influenced by the way it was processed. It's important that the zeolite is processed carefully to maintain its effectiveness. Tribomechanically pulverized is important, as this breaks up the voids rather than crushing them. This creates space for the pollutants that need to be bound.
- Particle size: It's important that the zeolite particles are the right size to effectively bind pollutants. A medium particle size of 14 microns is perfect for dogs.
How can zeolite be used externally on dogs?
- Zeolite powder can be used as a dry shampoo by applying it to the coat and massaging it in. It helps remove pollutants and impurities from the coat.
-
As zeolite gel: Zeolite gel can be used as a skin care product by applying it to the affected area. It can help relieve pain and inflammation and accelerate wound healing. Add zeolite powder to aloe vera gel and stir it gently to create your own suspension.
- As a zeolite solution: Zeolite solution can be used as a conditioner by rubbing it into the coat after washing. It helps remove pollutants and impurities from the coat. Most importantly, this zeolite conditioner removes many odors that have settled in the coat. Instructions for DIY coat sprays can be found in the article: Dog Shedding - Tips for Less Shedding and a Healthy Coat.
-
As a zeolite ointment : Apply this ointment to wounds, for example, the areas where dogs like to lie, and then the fur falls off. Gently massage in to stimulate the skin to grow fur again.
How do you dose zeolite correctly for dogs? Zeolite dosage - How much zeolite should you give your dog?
AGES, the Austrian feed authority, stipulates that 1% should not be exceeded.
So, if your dog weighs 5 kg, he probably eats between 200-400 g, depending. Then you add 1-2 g to his dog food.
If your dog eats 400-600g, then you can optimize the dog food with 2-3g.
If you feed 600-1000g, that's what our dog gets. He weighs 24kg and eats 800g (plus a few treats), plus about half a large scoop of zeolite daily. (Up to the line in the middle of the large scoop from the 450g can, there's less than 5g, and that costs 27 cents a day.)
If your dog eats between 1kg - 1.5kg - then you can add at least 5-7g to the food.
Our 250g can comes with a small scoop. It contains 3g when leveled. This daily dose of zeolite costs 17 cents, or €0.17.
The large 450g can has a larger measuring scoop: it holds approximately 9g. It has a line in the middle, making it easy to measure out half the amount.
PLEASE NOTE : Other zeolite products on the market are coarser, and therefore a larger dosage is required. DOGKRAFT zeolite for dogs has an average particle size of 14 microns. Therefore, this zeolite has a truly large effective surface area . The result is that you can dose more sparingly, which is more sustainable. This means you need less, save money, and help use our planet's resources responsibly.
How long should you give or feed zeolite to a dog?
Either as a 6-8-week treatment twice a year. Spring and fall are when the coat changes, and a detox or purification treatment can be very beneficial for the organism.
Or optimize the food daily with zeolite. For preventative and wellness purposes, and to relieve the detoxification organs. Our dog gets the powder daily. He gets delicious wet food—he loves it—from a tin can, so I want to enrich the dog food daily with zeolite, which binds harmful substances.
Does zeolite help with diarrhea ?
Yes, and how. You have to imagine zeolite as a very effective rock sponge, with many cavities that bind toxins in the intestines. This calms digestion.
Zeolite can be a very effective and natural aid in the treatment of diarrhea in dogs. It works by adsorbing toxins, regulating pH, strengthening the intestinal barrier, retaining water, and promoting the healing of intestinal irritations.
What are alternatives to zeolite for dogs?
There are several alternatives, but they aren't actually alternatives to zeolite for dogs. However, the following substances can be used in addition to improve well-being and digestion:
- Probiotics: Probiotics are microbial life that supports intestinal health and can help remove harmful substances and toxins from the gut—in fact, convert them.
- Enzymes: Enzymes are proteins that accelerate certain chemical reactions in the body. They can help improve digestion and remove harmful substances and toxins from the intestines.
- Fiber: Fiber is plant fiber that can help improve digestion and remove harmful substances and toxins from the intestines.
- Vegetable oils: Vegetable oils, such as linseed oil, can help improve digestion and remove harmful substances and toxins from the intestines.
"I tried zeolite for my dog a few months ago because I'd heard it could help improve digestion and remove toxins and pollutants from his gut. I have to say, I'm really impressed with the results! Since adding zeolite to his food once a day, his coat has felt much shinier and healthier , and he's had fewer problems with diarrhea. I would definitely recommend trying it if you want to do something good for your dog." *****

Use of zeolite in elderly dogs
Zeolite can also be used as a supplement for older dogs to support their overall well-being and alleviate potential problems. Here are a few examples of how zeolite could be used for older dogs:
-
Digestive support : As dogs age, they may experience digestive problems such as constipation or diarrhea. Their intestines no longer function as smoothly, and the intestinal lining can become clogged with toxins. Zeolite can help improve digestion and remove toxins and pollutants from the intestines in a completely natural way. Simply add it to their food!
- Relief from pain and inflammation : Zeolite can also help relieve pain and inflammation by improving circulation and accelerating wound healing.
- Improve kidney function : Zeolite can also help improve kidney function in older dogs by removing pollutants and toxins from the intestines and regulating pH.
- Supports beard hair growth: Zeolite stimulates coat health and thus coat growth. Older dogs need their fine whiskers even more, and therefore they need to be encouraged to grow back. Zeolite does just that.
What exactly does zeolite bind in the dog’s body?
Zeolite is a natural mineral known for its ability to bind and remove harmful substances and toxins from the intestines. It can bind heavy metals, mycotoxins, and other toxins ingested through food, as well as waste products and toxins produced by bacteria in the intestines.
These are called sorption series . These can, of course, vary and depend on several factors (pH value, origin, grain size and grinding of the zeolite, number of ions in the intestine, etc.).
Basically, for zeolite from our mining site (Eastern Slovakia - Prof. Karl Hecht recommends this mining site because of the optimal composition of the natural zeolite), the following sorption series can be assumed:
Mercury, ammonium, lead, histamine, aluminum, benzidine, cesium.
Here are some colloquial synonyms for zeolite - as zeolite is sometimes called
- Clinoptilolite ♡✔️
- Healing clay
- Mineral earth
- Heavy metal absorbers
- Toxin scavengers
- Detoxifier
- Detoxifying agents
- Primary rock flour
- volcanic mineral
These terms are sometimes used as an alternative to "zeolite".

Zeolite activates self-regulation *****
“I bought the Dogkraft Zeolite,
because a friend recommended it to me. My 12-year-old Husky-German Shepherd mix changed.
He had less appetite, stopped eating certain things altogether, and was listless. I started feeding him zeolite, and he vomited up worm eggs. That's how I knew what was wrong and was able to treat him. Zeolite was what brought this to light.
After the deworming, my dog is as good as new and has all his bad habits back.”

Heute bin ich gefragt worden, ob es stimmt, dass man das Zeolith-Pulver mit einer Spritze ins Maul appliziert. Der Tierarzt hat das so empfohlen. Was ich denn dazu sage.
