🐄 What animals really need – and why zeolite is nothing new

Prof. Karl Hecht - Pioneer of Zeolite Science Explains What's Missing in Livestock Farming

Imagine giving an animal exactly what it would seek out in nature. Not as an experiment – but because research has proven it for decades. Prof. Dr. Dr. med. Karl Hecht summarized this in a groundbreaking scientific article. And we believe: This belongs on every farm.

Who is Prof. Karl Hecht?

Prof. Dr. Dr. med. Karl Hecht is a professor emeritus and one of the most renowned researchers in the German-speaking world when it comes to the effects of natural minerals on humans and animals. In his article "Ecologically Clean Food Products", published in the specialist magazine OM & Ernährung (2015, No. 152), he poses a question that every farmer should ask:

Why doesn't an animal in industrial farming get what it would seek out in the wild?

Animals heal themselves – if allowed to

In nature, many animals instinctively engage in what is called zoopharmacognosy – the scientific term for self-medication. Bears, sheep, cows, chickens, even monkeys: they all deliberately eat certain earths and minerals when their bodies need them.

Brazilian biologist Eraldo Medeiro Costa-Neto has extensively studied this behavior. His findings: Especially in herbivorous animals, geophagy – the eating of earth and clay minerals – is highly pronounced. And it fulfills very specific tasks:

  • Mineral supply (calcium, magnesium, potassium, silicon, etc.)
  • Detoxification (heavy metals, ammonia, fungal toxins)
  • Protection against parasites
  • Neutralization of acidification
  • Strengthening the immune system
  • Support for bone health

In Siberia and the Far East, scientists observed that free-ranging domestic animals – cows, sheep, goats, chickens – deliberately ingested silicon-containing minerals of the zeolite group. Bears ate particularly large quantities of zeolite rock before mating season and during pregnancy.

This is no coincidence. This is natural intelligence.

The Problem: This is Exactly What's Missing in Industrial Livestock Farming

Prof. Hecht clearly states it: In industrial farming, animals are completely deprived of natural self-medication. No free range, no mineral earth, no zeolite. Instead: antibiotics.

But antibiotics cannot replace what zeolite achieves. On the contrary – their widespread use has triggered a global crisis. The WHO warned in a comprehensive report in 2011: antibiotic-resistant germs have reached a level where simple infections can become life-threatening again. In Europe, an estimated 25,000 people die annually from antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

And a major driver of this crisis? The excessive use of antibiotics in livestock farming.

What happens when animals receive zeolite?

In his article, Prof. Hecht presents an impressive collection of scientific studies. Here are the most important results – categorized by animal species:

🐄 Cattle & Dairy Cows

Studies from several countries show: If natural clinoptilolite zeolite is regularly given as a feed additive, milk yield and milk quality (higher protein, fat, and mineral content) demonstrably improve. Calves grow faster, get sick less often, and are weaned earlier. Fattening bulls show better mineral status and higher quality meat protein.

Zeolite acts in the digestive tract like a molecular sieve: It binds pollutants, free radicals, and excess acids – and at the same time releases important minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

As bedding in cubicles, zeolite keeps the area dry, reduces ammonia, and protects against Mortellaro and hoof problems. As a slurry additive, zeolite binds nitrogen (NH₃/NH₄) and prevents its outgassing – the slurry becomes more valuable, and the soil benefits.

🐖 Pigs

Breeding sows that received zeolite showed larger litters, lower piglet mortality, better bone structure, and less aggressiveness. Fattening pigs grew faster, had better blood and tissue values, and higher quality meat composition.

Particularly impressive: When Croatian zeolite producer Tihomir Lelas delivered zeolite directly to pigsties, the animals immediately pounced on it and ate it eagerly. Their instinct knew what their bodies needed. As a result, the health of the herd rapidly improved – and piglet mortality significantly decreased.

🐑 Sheep

Studies, especially from Australia, prove: Zeolite and bentonite improve animal growth and measurably increase wool production. The mineral status of the animals also demonstrably improves.

Zeolite also protects against mold toxins (aflatoxins)

An often underestimated risk in animal husbandry: aflatoxins – fungal toxins that can occur in contaminated feed, corn, hay, or straw. They damage the liver, weaken the immune system, and can be carcinogenic. Zeolite and bentonite can adsorb these mycotoxins in the digestive tract – i.e., bind them and render them harmless. This has been proven in numerous studies for cattle, pigs, and poultry.

Clinoptilolite: Officially approved by EFSA

This is not secret knowledge. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has confirmed the safety and efficacy of both bentonite and natural clinoptilolite zeolite for all animal species in scientific opinions (2012 and 2013). Clinoptilolite is approved as a feed additive throughout the EU under the identification number E568. The opinions are clear: These minerals are non-toxic, have no undesirable side effects, and are environmentally friendly.

What this means for your farm

Prof. Hecht summarizes it clearly: Zeolite is not a panacea and not a substitute for natural animal husbandry. But it is a first important step – away from antibiotics, towards healthier animals and higher quality products.

The natural cycle works: Healthier animals → fewer antibiotics → higher quality meat and healthier milk → slurry that nourishes rather than burdens the soil → better harvest → healthier diet.

STEINKRAFT Zeolite is made exactly for this purpose. Our natural clinoptilolite zeolite is processed with the unique Air2Air Activation Technology milling process – for maximum active surface area and optimal bioavailability.
