A Journey Back to Vibrant Landscapes, Ancient Cultures, and the Forgotten Language of the Earth
Some books leave knowledge.
Others leave images.
And some silently change one's view of the world.
Stone Age Farming by Alanna Moore is, for me, exactly one of those rare books. It's not a classic agriculture book, nor is it a typical permaculture book. It feels more like a slow journey back to a different way of perceiving landscape.
After just a few pages, one realizes that Moore is searching for something that has almost been lost in our modern world. She doesn't just write about soils, plants, or minerals. She writes about relationship. About atmosphere. About the question of why some places feel alive and others exhausted.
And the longer one reads, the more one begins to sense that this book is actually a great invitation:
To look at the Earth differently again.
What immediately struck me is the way Moore writes about agriculture. Never technically cold. Never like a production system. For her, agriculture seems to be something deeply alive.
Again and again, she describes how modern agriculture has begun to view soils almost exclusively chemically. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. Yield, efficiency, control.
And at the same time, she poses an observation that many people probably intuitively understand:
Why are there soils that seem tired despite fertilization?
Why are there landscapes where plants seem to thrive effortlessly?
Why do some places feel soft, calm, and nourishing, while others seem depleted?
Moore writes something to the effect of:
"Healthy land has a feeling to it."
And it is precisely this "feeling" that runs through the entire book.
Not sentimental.
But attentive.
Alanna Moore was particularly strongly influenced by the works of Philip S. Callahan. His thoughts on paramagnetism, volcanic rocks, and the electromagnetic properties of landscapes constantly reappear in the background of the book.
But Moore makes something very unique out of it.
While Callahan often writes like a researcher, Moore seems almost like someone who feels landscapes.
She describes basalt and mineral-rich soils not just through analytical values, but through their effect on plants, water, and atmosphere. Volcanic regions, in particular, consistently fascinate her. She observes that exceptionally fertile landscapes on Earth are often associated with volcanic rocks.
And suddenly, one begins to think about it oneself.
Why have volcanic soils been considered fertile for millennia?
Why do some mineral-rich landscapes seem full of life?
Why do plants there seem to grow stronger, more resilient, and more vital?
Of course, the book does not provide definitive scientific answers to this. And that's precisely what makes it interesting. Moore does not write dogmatically. She observes.
Again and again, while reading, one gets the feeling that she is trying to understand landscape as a whole. Not separated into:
Soil,
Water,
Minerals,
Plants
and climate.
But as a living interplay.
The book becomes particularly fascinating where Moore begins to incorporate ancient cultures into her thoughts.
The deeper she delves into landscape, the more she suddenly becomes interested in stone circles, Irish round towers, megalithic sites, and historic sacred places. She poses a question that runs through the entire book:
Why did people for millennia erect monumental structures precisely in certain places?
Why do many ancient cult sites stand on hills, in volcanic regions, or near special rock formations?
And why do people still report that some of these places possess a special atmosphere?
Moore does not describe ancient cultures as primitive. Rather, almost the opposite. She feels that people in earlier times perceived landscape more sensitively than we do today.
Not technically.
But intuitively.
A sentence in the spirit of her book has particularly stuck with me:
"The ancients may have understood the language of the land far better than we do today."
And suddenly one begins to think about how alienated our modern world has often become from landscape.
We analyze soils.
We measure fields.
We optimize plant production.
But when was the last time we truly tried to perceive a place?
A particularly beautiful part of the book deals with water. And here, too, it quickly becomes clear that Moore views water completely differently from modern agricultural systems.
For her, water is not just a raw material.
But part of a living cycle.
Again and again, she writes about how healthy landscapes gently absorb water and slowly release it. How mineral-rich soils store moisture. How certain landscape forms hold water and at the same time promote vitality.
In doing so, she connects soil structure, minerals, and water in a way that suddenly seems astonishingly modern again today.
Because more and more research shows:
Healthy soils store water better.
Humus-rich landscapes remain more stable.
Mineral diversity influences soil structure.
Microorganisms change water balances.
The longer one reads Stone Age Farming, the more one understands:
The book is actually a plea for living cycles.
Not control.
But cooperation with nature.
I was also particularly touched by Moore's calm way of writing about perception. Again and again, she describes landscapes almost atmospherically.
Ancient trees.
Rock formations.
Volcanic regions.
Wind movements.
Watercourses.
And suddenly, while reading, this feeling arises:
Perhaps nature is much more intelligent and interconnected than we long believed.
Of course, there are also ideas in the book that are scientifically controversial. Especially where Moore writes about geomantic lines, landscape energies, or ancient stone systems.
And that is precisely why one should read the book with an open mind.
Not as a collection of ultimate truths.
But as an invitation to observe.
For the true strength of Stone Age Farming may not lie in being able to explain everything.
But in allowing wonder again.
The longer I read this book, the more I felt that Alanna Moore is actually writing about something that many people feel deep inside:
That healthy landscapes possess an atmosphere.
That living soils have a different effect.
That some places radiate power.
And that true sustainability perhaps begins precisely there:
When we learn again not just to use landscape, but to perceive it.
Perhaps that is the most important message of this extraordinary book.
Not the idea that we already know all the answers.
But the reminder that the Earth is a living system.
And that we are perhaps only just beginning to understand how deeply everything is interconnected.
