So, what to do for your garden soil in autumn:
1. Soil Preparation: Lime and Zeolite for a good basic supply. Autumn is the ideal time to prepare the soil for the coming season. Lime and zeolite play a crucial role here. Lime regulates the pH value and ensures optimal conditions for plant growth. The addition of micronized lime ensures better absorption by the plants. This means that the lime can then be absorbed by the plant roots. Otherwise, it just lies in the soil. Okay. It loosens it up, we give the soil lime so that it can unfold its effect. Zeolite, known as a soil improver, increases water retention capacity and nutrient availability in the soil. More precisely: Coarse zeolite should be used for soil loosening. For zeolite to absorb water or a lot of water, it must be fine. Tribomechanically ground - or more correctly, pulverized - zeolite supports the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the soil due to its electrostatic charge. So that the nutrients also migrate to the plant roots and are attracted by them. For this, the soil needs basic energy. Otherwise, nothing moves. And rightly so: Microorganisms are also part of it, the soil milieu is important for cation exchange to take place.
2. Protection from Cold: Vermiculite for an optimal soil structure. The cold temperatures of winter can stress the soil. This is where vermiculite comes in. It improves soil structure, increases water retention capacity, and protects plant roots from frost damage. Vermiculite allows roots to absorb nutrients more efficiently, thus promoting healthy plant growth.
3. Activation of Soil Life: Microorganisms for vitality. A vital soil is the key to healthy plant growth. Microorganisms play a central role here. The addition of high-quality microorganisms stimulates soil biology, which leads to better nutrient cycling and increased soil fertility. This is particularly important in autumn to prepare the soil for the next growing season.
4. Natural Minerals: Basalt for sustainable soil supply. Basalt rock or primary rock flour, as it is often called, is a natural source of minerals and trace elements. Adding basalt flour in the autumn months enriches the soil with important nutrients in the long term. The minerals are released slowly and are available to plants over a longer period. AND: Basalt helps the earth's magnetic field to stabilize and realign itself. Not all basalt. For STEINKRAFT, we have the basalt that has a great effect on the magnetic field. Tested with a special device from Australia by TERRAFELIX.
5. Focus on Sustainability: Holistic care for the soil. As a hobby gardener and managing director of Steinkraft, it is important to me to care for our soil in a natural and sustainable way. Our products—zeolite, lime, vermiculite, microorganisms, and basalt—work in harmony with nature to strengthen the soil for healthy plant growth. Because only healthy soil allows us to cultivate magnificent gardens and achieve fresh, nutrient-rich harvests.
1️⃣ Lime – For Balance and pH Stability
Lime regulates the pH value and creates optimal conditions for plant growth. The addition of micronized lime improves absorption by the plants – so it can unfold its full effect.
Application Tip:
-
Best time: September to November, before frost
-
Spread on moist, unfrozen soil
-
Work in lightly or let rain wash it in
-
100–150 g/m², depending on soil type
Tip: Check pH value beforehand – ideally it should be 6–7.
2️⃣ Zeolite – For Structure and Nutrient Storage
Zeolite improves soil structure, increases water retention capacity, and promotes nutrient availability. Particularly fine, tribomechanically activated zeolite acts like a nutrient magnet due to its electrostatic charge.
Application Tip:
-
Apply in autumn after liming or together with basalt
-
Sprinkle fine zeolite powder thinly over the soil (approx. 100 g/m²)
-
Work in with a rake or let the rain wash it in
-
Ideal for vegetable beds, perennial areas, and under fruit trees
Tip: Fine zeolite binds excess nutrients and keeps them available for spring.
→ A comprehensive overview of scientific studies on the effects of zeolite in garden soil can be found in this study overview.
→ Those who wish to use Zeolite in their own garden will find further information on application and products on the page Zeolite for Garden and Soil Improvement.
3️⃣ Vermiculite – For Frost Protection and Moisture
Vermiculite protects roots from frost and provides a loose, moisture-balancing soil structure. It stores water and air simultaneously – a gift for sensitive plants.
Application Tip:
-
Best time: October until the first frost
-
Work lightly into the top soil layer (2–3 cm)
-
Especially good for beds, herb areas, and perennials
-
50–100 g/m² or 1 part vermiculite to 3 parts soil
Tip: Also excellent as an additive for outdoor potted plants.
4️⃣ Microorganisms – For Living Soil
Healthy soil is alive – thanks to microorganisms. They activate the nutrient cycle, promote root health, and improve soil structure.
Application Tip:
-
Ideal from September to mid-November, as long as the ground is not frozen
-
Dissolve liquid microorganisms (EM) in water and pour over the soil
-
Then apply zeolite or basalt – this creates ideal habitats
-
10 ml EM to 10 l water per m²
Tip: In mild, humid weather, microorganisms work particularly actively.
5️⃣ Basalt / Primary Rock Flour – For Natural Mineral Power
Basalt provides valuable minerals and trace elements that are released slowly. It strengthens the soil structure, balances it, and supports the earth's magnetic field balance.
Application Tip:
-
Possible all year round, especially in autumn after rain periods
-
Spread evenly over beds or lawn (approx. 100 g/m²)
-
Work in lightly or let the rain wash it in
-
Ideal in combination with zeolite for harmonious mineral supply
Tip: Our Steinkraft basalt has been tested with a special device from TERRAFELIX – its magnetic resonance force supports the natural balance of the soil.
