Growing blueberries that really shine — Boosting anthocyanins, preventing diseases, measuring Brix

Two blueberry bushes in the garden. Things happen. They get mowed down.

That's the moment when you ask yourself: What do I need if I replace them—to make them really good? So that Ezra doesn't spit out his berries again?

The answer doesn't start with the bush. It starts with the soil. And for blueberries, this is even more crucial than for almost any other crop—because this plant needs soil that is fundamentally different from what normal garden soil offers.


The Blueberry and its Acidic Soil - The Most Important Difference

Blueberries need acidic soil. pH 4.5 to 5.5—that is significantly more acidic than the pH range most other garden plants prefer. And that is non-negotiable.

Why is that? The blueberry has chosen a unique evolutionary path. It lives in symbiosis with Ericaceous mycorrhizae—a very specific fungal network that thrives only in acidic soils. This mycorrhiza makes minerals available to the blueberry that would be inaccessible to other plants in acidic soils—especially manganese, iron, and trace elements that directly contribute to anthocyanin formation.

Anyone who plants blueberries in normal garden soil will get stunted, sickly plants with a low Brix value. Those who adjust the pH will get vital bushes that protect themselves and produce fully ripe berries with a deep, dark color.

Lowering the pH: The most reliable method for home gardens is rhododendron soil or a special blueberry substrate as planting soil. For larger areas: incorporating sulfur lowers the pH long-term. Vinegar water (1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar per 10 liters) can help short-term.

Important: Regularly measure pH—with a simple soil test kit. Blueberries show lime damage through yellow leaves.

What Happens on Wrong vs. Right Soil - and What Zeolite Does

Here lies a particular challenge: Zeolite as a soil additive acts as a pH buffer—it stabilizes the pH in the neutral to slightly alkaline range. This is ideal for tomatoes, carrots, and grapevines. For blueberries, a different approach is needed.

Zeolite for Blueberries: BODENKRAFT PUR can be used in very small quantities—not as a pH buffer but for its water retention properties. Blueberries have a shallow, fine-fibered root system that is very sensitive to drought stress. A small amount of zeolite—50 kg per hectare instead of the usual 200 kg—improves water retention without shifting the pH.

Steinkraft Basalt: Use very sparingly with blueberries. Basalt slightly increases the pH due to its basic reaction in the soil. Small quantities as a mineral source for trace elements are possible—but never in the amounts we recommend for other crops.

AM+PLUS Microorganisms: Here lies the greatest potential for blueberries. AM+PLUS supports the development of an active soil microbiome—and the Ericaceous mycorrhiza that blueberries need is strengthened by a living, active soil life. The microorganism preparation can be applied specifically around the root zone—every 3 to 4 weeks during the growing season.

Grünkraft Calcium as Foliar Fertilizer: Here lies the strongest effect for blueberries. Foliar fertilization completely bypasses the soil—it delivers CO₂ and calcium directly to the leaf, regardless of the soil's pH. This is particularly valuable for blueberries: Photosynthesis is boosted, more energy is available for anthocyanin formation, and cell walls are strengthened—without affecting the acidic soil.

The Most Important Blueberry Diseases - What's Behind Them

Gray Mold - Botrytis cinerea

The same fungus we know from strawberries and grapevines. It preferentially attacks young shoots in cool, damp weather. Infestation appears as a gray mold on berries and shoots.

What's behind it: Botrytis loves stressed plants with thin cell walls. A blueberry plant well-supplied with calcium—via foliar fertilization with Grünkraft Calcium—forms more stable cell walls and thus fewer entry points for the fungus. Good ventilation through sufficient spacing between bushes is the most important preventive measure in the garden.

Anthracnose - Colletotrichum acutatum

Orange to red spots on berries and shoots—that's the hallmark of anthracnose. It primarily affects plants in warm, humid weather and can significantly damage the harvest.

What's behind it: Resistant varieties such as Elliot, Berkeley, Duke, and Pioneer are significantly less susceptible. For susceptible varieties, foliar fertilization with Grünkraft Calcium and Grünkraft Zeolith Pur is particularly valuable as a preventive measure—the physical silicate film on the leaf surface makes it harder for fungal spores to penetrate.

Godronia - Stem Blight

Dark, sunken areas on shoots that are dying. Godronia overwinters on infected shoots. Immediately prune infected wood back to healthy wood and dispose of it in household waste—never in compost.

Spotted Wing Drosophila - Drosophila suzukii

The newest and increasingly problematic pest in blueberry cultivation. The spotted wing drosophila lays its eggs in ripe and ripening berries—the larvae feed on the fruit pulp. Infested berries become soft and begin to ferment.

What's behind it: The physical protective film of Grünkraft Zeolith Pur on the berries—fine silicate particles—acts as a natural repellent against the fly. This is not a chemical insecticide but a mechanical effect. Renew regularly after rain.

Downy Mildew and Leaf Spot

In wet weather, various leaf spot pathogens can appear. Vital plants with high Brix values are significantly more resistant—the same principle we see in all other crops.

The Program for Vital Blueberries

Soil Preparation - pH First

Timing: Before planting—ideally 4 to 6 weeks beforehand.

Fill planting hole with rhododendron soil or blueberry substrate. Measure pH and adjust to 4.5 to 5.5. Mix a small handful of BODENKRAFT PUR into the planting hole as a water buffer—no more. Pour AM+PLUS directly into the root zone when planting.

Planting distance: At least 1.5 meters between bushes—for good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases from spreading between densely packed plants.

Mulching: Bark mulch or pine needles around the plants retains moisture, keeps the pH low, and suppresses weeds. This is particularly important for blueberries.

Activating Soil Life: AM+PLUS

Timing: When planting—and then every 3 to 4 weeks.

AM+PLUS strengthens the soil microbiome that supports the blueberry's Ericaceous mycorrhiza. Apply directly as a soil drench around the root zone—not on the leaves at blueberry pH.

Foliar Fertilization: Grünkraft Calcium from Bud Break

Timing: As soon as the first leaves appear—and then every 10 to 14 days.

Grünkraft Calcium is the most effective measure for anthocyanin formation in blueberries. The increased photosynthesis due to CO₂ supply directly in the leaf produces more sugar—and more sugar means more energy for the formation of anthocyanins, i.e., more of the deep purple pigment that makes blueberries so valuable.

First application: 5g per 1 liter of water. From the second application every 10–14 days: 20–30g per 1 liter of water. Spray early in the morning or late in the afternoon—never in midday heat.

Important: Grünkraft Calcium can be combined with all commercially available plant protection products.

Protective Film: Grünkraft Zeolith Pur

Timing: Parallel to Grünkraft Calcium—especially important from fruit set.

The silicate film on the berries acts against the spotted wing drosophila and fungal spores. Renew immediately after rain.

What You Will Observe

Darker green leaves after the first Grünkraft Calcium treatment—more chlorophyll, more intensive photosynthesis. More uniform flowering. And at harvest: berries that are deeper purple, more intensely fragrant, and have exactly the taste that won't make Ezra spit them out.

Measure the Brix value: A fully ripe blueberry with 14 to 16 °Brix is the goal. Lightly press a few berries, put a drop on the refractometer—it quickly shows if the harvest is truly nutrient-rich.


For the Garden - Two New Bushes Instead of the Mown Ones

When planting: Rhododendron soil as potting substrate. A small handful of BODENKRAFT PUR in the planting hole. AM+PLUS in the watering can when planting.

From bud break: Grünkraft Calcium every 10 to 14 days as a fine mist on leaves and shoots. Add Grünkraft Zeolith Pur from fruit set.

Every 3 to 4 weeks: AM+PLUS in the watering can.

Renew bark mulch around the bushes—it keeps the pH low and soil life active.

And then: wait. Observe. And next summer, let Ezra decide.
