The revolution in the horse stable: How zeolite bedding combines health, cleanliness and well-being
The most important thing first:
Ammonia is not only unpleasant for horses, but also poses a serious threat to their health. Continuous exposure can lead to irreversible damage to the respiratory system and negatively impact the animals' well-being in the long term. Therefore, it is important to keep the ammonia concentration in the stable as low as possible through appropriate measures such as choosing the right bedding and ensuring good ventilation.
Challenges in the horse stable: Optimizing hoof health and air quality
Finding the right bedding for horses is one of the biggest challenges horse owners and stable managers face. The animals' hoof health, in particular, is heavily dependent on the choice of bedding. One aspect that is often overlooked is the ammonia pollution in the stable air. Many horse stables are located in former cowsheds and are often difficult to ventilate. This leads to high ammonia concentrations in the air, especially during the winter months or on hot summer days when horses prefer to stay in the cool stable. Even small amounts of ammonia can irritate the horses' respiratory systems and weaken their immune systems. In extreme cases, this can even trigger allergic reactions.
A good stable is therefore not only a safe, clean place for the animals, but also one where the bedding contributes to their health. Conventional bedding, such as sawdust or straw, often has more disadvantages than advantages. Sawdust can contain pollutants and heavy metals, while high-quality straw can be prone to the formation of mycotoxins due to poor storage. But what is the alternative?
HORSEKRAFT Zeolite Bedding: A natural solution with added value
This is where HORSEKRAFT Zeolite bedding comes in – a sustainable and health-friendly alternative specially developed for horses. Made from feed-grade lime, natural zeolite, and a special blend of herbs, including lavender, it offers numerous benefits for equine health. This innovative bedding effectively binds ammonia, significantly improving air quality in the stable. This has a positive effect on the animals' breathing and can considerably reduce the risk of respiratory diseases.
Furthermore, the zeolite bedding ensures dry hooves by absorbing and binding moisture, thus preventing thrush. Anyone who has ever struggled with this persistent problem knows how important dry hooves are for equine health. Thanks to the bedding's high absorbency, damp areas can be easily removed, reducing bedding consumption and therefore costs.
The added value of zeolite: sustainability and better soils
Another advantage of HORSEKRAFT zeolite bedding is its positive effect on the environment. The horse manure, enriched by the bedding, transforms into high-quality, organic fertilizer. This can be used in agriculture, supplying the soil with essential nutrients such as calcium and silicon. This results in healthier soil and improved plant growth, so stable owners also benefit.
HORSEKRAFT follows a clear philosophy: Raw materials are processed in such a way that they can be used as effectively as possible, thereby reducing both costs and environmental impact.
Our tip: Investing together pays off.
HORSEKRAFT bedding with zeolite is offered in large quantities – 66 bags per pallet or half that size with 33 bags. This is particularly worthwhile for stable communities who can order together. Not only do the horses benefit from a healthier stable environment and drier hooves, but so does the stable owner, who has less ammonia in the air and also receives valuable fertilizer for their fields.
Why lavender in the bedding?
Lavender is known for its calming effect on the nervous system. Even the Romans used lavender to relax body and mind. Furthermore, its pleasant scent repels annoying insects like mosquitoes and flies, making life in the stable even more comfortable for horses.
Conclusion: A win-win-win for horse, stable and environment
Choosing the right bedding is crucial for the health and well-being of horses. HORSEKRAFT zeolite bedding not only impresses with its ammonia-binding properties and promotion of hoof health, but also offers sustainable benefits for the environment. Whether through improved stable air, drier hooves, or its use as a biological fertilizer – this bedding ensures all-around satisfaction for horses, owners, and stable managers.
Why is ammonia so dangerous for horses' lungs?
Ammonia is a toxic gas released during the decomposition of horse urine and manure. In poorly ventilated stables, ammonia concentrations can rise rapidly and have significant effects on horses' health. The animals' respiratory system is particularly affected, as ammonia irritates the mucous membranes and can impair lung function in the long term. Here are the main reasons why ammonia is so dangerous for horses' lungs:
1. Irritation of the airways
Ammonia is a strong irritant to the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and lungs. Even at low concentrations, the gas can cause coughing, watery eyes, and shortness of breath. Horses in such situations often exhibit increased nostril flapping and coughing, which is a sign of irritation of the upper respiratory tract.
2. Weakening of the immune system
Constant exposure to ammonia weakens a horse's immune system. The mucous membranes of the respiratory tract normally form an important protective barrier against pathogens. However, irritation and damage to this barrier make horses more susceptible to infections and inflammations, such as chronic bronchitis.
3. Lung damage
Ammonia attacks the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs responsible for gas exchange. Constant exposure leads to reduced lung capacity and consequently impaired oxygen uptake. In severe cases, this can result in permanent damage to the lung tissue, significantly affecting the horse's performance.
4. Promotion of allergies and chronic respiratory diseases
Ammonia, in combination with dust and other pollutants in the stable, can trigger allergic reactions and chronic respiratory diseases such as hay fever (RAO, Recurrent Airway Obstruction) or the so-called "heaves syndrome." These diseases are not only difficult to treat, but also significantly reduce the well-being and quality of life of the horses.
5. Influence on behavior
When the air quality in the stable is poor, horses avoid lying down and resting because they are then in close proximity to the bedding and therefore to the ammonia concentration. This leads to insufficient regeneration and increased stress.

Benefits of zeolite bedding in summer: Fewer flies, fewer larvae and a more pleasant stable climate.
In summer, flies and other insects pose a major problem in many horse stables. They bother the animals, promote the spread of germs and infections, and significantly impair the horses' well-being. HORSEKRAFT zeolite bedding can make a big difference here. Its unique properties help improve the stable climate and effectively reduce the infestation of insects and their larvae.
1. Reduced fly infestation
Zeolite has the ability to bind ammonia and moisture, thus reducing the formation of a damp environment. Flies are particularly attracted to damp, ammonia-rich areas in the barn, as these offer ideal conditions for laying eggs. Zeolite bedding specifically reduces these damp areas, making the barn less attractive to flies and thus significantly reducing the fly population.
2. Reduction of larval development
The combination of zeolite with herbs like lavender has another positive effect: the scent of lavender repels many insects, including flies. This makes the barn less attractive to flies. Furthermore, the zeolite inhibits the development of larvae by binding moisture and ammonia – two essential factors for the survival and growth of fly larvae.
3. Improved hygiene in the stable
By reducing moisture and pollutants, the germ count in the stable also decreases. Less moisture means less breeding ground for bacteria and mold, which in turn could weaken the horses' immune systems. With zeolite bedding, the stable remains drier, cleaner, and more hygienic, thus reducing the risk of disease.
4. Pleasant fragrance and calming effect
The organic herbs included, such as lavender, not only bring a pleasant fragrance to the stable but also have a calming effect on the horses. Lavender also repels mosquitoes and flies, significantly improving the animals' quality of life during the summer.
5. Reduced use of chemical insect repellents
Thanks to the natural insect-repellent properties of zeolite bedding and the herbs it contains, the use of chemical insecticides in the barn can be reduced. This is not only more environmentally friendly, but also better for the health of both humans and animals.
6. Less stress for horses
Flies and other insects are a constant source of stress for horses in summer. Constant tail swishing, skin twitching, and head tossing disturb the animals and prevent them from relaxing and recovering. An environment with less insect activity contributes to a calmer and less stressful stable atmosphere.
HORSEKRAFT zeolite bedding reduces flies and larvae in summer, making the stable more hygienic and comfortable. The combination of ammonia binding, moisture control, and the repellent effect of herbs makes this bedding the ideal solution for a stress-free and healthy stable environment during the summer months.

Horse bedding is used as organic fertilizer in agriculture.
By combining HORSEKRAFT bedding with horse manure, a high-quality fertilizer is created that can be used in organic farming, where it provides the soil with nutrients produced by the animals themselves.
The result:
More vital soils thanks to calcium, silicon, and other trace elements contained in zeolite. Our STEINKRAFT philosophy is to refine raw materials so that less is needed: sustainability from its use as bedding and climate improvement in barns to its application in the field.
Our tip again:
We sell the zeolite bedding in large quantities, namely 66 bags on a pallet. Sometimes it's half a pallet, which is 33 bags. Then the transport is worthwhile. Either you convince the stable owner of the product – it smells less in the stable because there's less ammonia in the air, then all the boarders are happier, AND he gets a high-quality fertilizer for his fields. That means if he fertilizes the meadows with it, more different types of grass and herbs will grow, and above all, more of them.
Or you could do a group purchase for the stables.
That's a complete win-win-win situation. The third win is that the horse can breathe better, its hooves stay drier, and it might lie down more readily, allowing it to rest and relax more effectively.
