Grow pumpkins that glow — increase beta-carotene, prevent powdery mildew, measure Brix

A Hokkaido with deep orange-red skin, intense aroma, and 12 °Brix. Dense, nutty, sweet. Packed with beta-carotene and alpha-carotene. So heavy you can barely hold it in one hand.

This doesn't happen by chance. It happens due to built-up soil — and a plant that photosynthesizes intensely because it gets what it needs.

The pumpkin is more grateful than one might think. It doesn't need much — but what it needs, it truly needs. And when it gets it, it rewards with fruits that last for months, taste intensely, and nourish like hardly any other autumn vegetable.


What the pumpkin needs — the basics

Soil: Loose, rich in humus, deep, and warm. The pumpkin has a well-developed root system that penetrates deep into the soil — good, loose soil is a prerequisite for large, heavy fruits.

pH value: 6.0 to 6.8 — slightly acidic to neutral. In this range, all important nutrients are optimally available.

Warmth: Pumpkins are heat-loving. Do not plant out before mid-May when no more night frosts are expected. Pre-grow young plants indoors from April.

Space: Plan generously — pumpkin plants can develop several meters of vines. In the garden, at least 1 meter spacing between plants, more is better. Good air circulation (airflow between plants) is the most important prevention against powdery mildew.

Crop rotation: Do not grow pumpkins in the same location for several consecutive years — at least a three-year break. This prevents the accumulation of fungal diseases in the soil.

Companion planting: The proven "Three Sisters Principle" works well: corn provides wind protection, beans enrich the soil with nitrogen, nasturtiums keep aphids and whiteflies away. Garlic as a neighbor also protects against fungal diseases.


The most important pumpkin diseases — what's behind them

Powdery mildew — the most common enemy

White, powdery coating on the upper side of the leaves — that is the unmistakable sign of powdery mildew. It typically appears from mid-summer when the weather becomes warm and alternately dry-humid.

What's behind it: Powdery mildew loves stressed plants with thin cell walls. A pumpkin plant well supplied with calcium and silicon forms more stable cell walls and is significantly more resistant. The high silica content — supplied by GRÜNKRAFT Zeolith Pur — strengthens plant tissue and makes it more resistant to fungal infections. This is not theory — this is plant physiology.

Important: Remove affected leaves immediately and dispose of them in household waste — never in compost!

Downy mildew — in humid weather

Yellowish spots on the upper side of the leaves, gray-violet fungal growth on the underside of the leaves. Downy mildew loves cool, humid conditions — the opposite of powdery mildew.

What's behind it: Overhead watering (watering from above) strongly promotes downy mildew. Always water at the roots if possible instead of from above. Water in the morning so the leaves can dry by evening. Well-regulated stomata (leaf pores) due to calcium supply significantly reduce the penetration of fungal spores.

Fusarium wilt — the most dangerous fungus

Individual leaves or shoots wilt, especially on hot days, the plant wilts from one side, stems show brownish discoloration inside. Fusarium is a soil-borne fungus (a fungus that lives in the soil and attacks plant roots from there) that enters the plant through wounds.

What's behind it: Fusarium loves biologically dead, compacted soils. Active soil life with diverse microorganisms naturally keeps Fusarium in check — through direct competition for the same soil niches. AM+PLUS microorganisms are the most effective prevention here.

Aphids

Aphids preferentially settle on stressed plants with low Brix values (the measurement for nutrient density in plant sap). A well-nourished pumpkin plant with a high Brix value is significantly less attractive to aphids. The physical protective film of GRÜNKRAFT Zeolith Pur on the leaves — fine silicate particles (tiny mineral particles) — acts as a natural repellent against sucking insects.

Snails

The classic garden enemy — especially dangerous for young plants. Snails avoid soils with active soil life and high soil vitality. Customers report that with the combination of basalt, zeolite, and AM+PLUS, snail problems significantly decrease.


The complete program for nutrient-rich pumpkins

Step 1 — Soil preparation: BODENKRAFT PUR + Steinkraft Basalt

Timing: 3 to 4 weeks before planting — i.e., end of April.

BODENKRAFT PUR is tribomechanically activated zeolite (zeolite mineral activated by high-speed collision of mineral particles) in 100 µm grain size. Especially important for pumpkins: It stores moisture evenly in the root zone. Pumpkins are sensitive to drought stress — and drought stress is one of the main triggers for powdery mildew infestation.

Steinkraft Basalt, with its paramagnetic properties (a natural property of certain rocks that activates soil life), provides the broad spectrum of trace elements that the pumpkin needs for intense beta-carotene formation — silicon, iron, manganese, copper, zinc. The paramagnetic effect triples the microbial environment (the community of beneficial microorganisms in the soil) and creates the conditions for vibrant soil life.

Application in farming: Incorporate BODENKRAFT PUR 300–400 kg/ha + Steinkraft Basalt 300–500 kg/ha.

In the garden: Mix a generous handful of BODENKRAFT PUR and a handful of Basalt Granulat into each planting hole. Or scatter evenly over the pumpkin bed and rake in 15 cm deep.

Step 2 — Activate soil life: AM+PLUS Microorganisms

Timing: At planting and then every 3 to 4 weeks.

AM+PLUS is the original solution from Austrian organic herbs, based on lactic acid bacteria (microorganisms that promote fermentative rather than putrefactive processes), refined with homeopathy and spagyrics.

For pumpkins, AM+PLUS is particularly valuable against Fusarium — the active soil microbiome keeps the soil-borne fungus in check through natural competition. At the same time, the microorganisms make soil minerals plant-available — trace elements that directly contribute to beta-carotene and alpha-carotene.

Application: As a soil drench when planting, then every 3 to 4 weeks mixed with watering water.

Step 3 — First foliar fertilization: GRÜNKRAFT Calcium from the seedling stage

Timing: As soon as the young plant has established itself — about a week after transplanting.

GRÜNKRAFT Calcium delivers CO₂ directly into the leaf for intense photosynthesis (the process by which plants produce sugar and nutrients from sunlight, water, and CO₂) and calcium for stable cell walls. For pumpkins, this means: more energy for carotenoid formation (formation of orange-red plant pigments) and more stable cells against powdery mildew spores.

The measurable effect: The Brix value of the pumpkins increases with each treatment. More Brix means more beta-carotene, more alpha-carotene, more intense orange, better taste — and a pumpkin that lasts for months.

GRÜNKRAFT Calcium can be easily combined with all common plant protection products and fertilizers in one spray application.

First application: 5g per 1 liter of water. From the second application every 10–14 days: 20–30g per 1 liter of water. Spray time: Early morning or late afternoon when the stomata (leaf pores) are open.

Step 4 — GRÜNKRAFT Zeolith Pur as a protective film

Timing: Parallel to GRÜNKRAFT Calcium — especially in humid weather and when powdery mildew is a risk.

GRÜNKRAFT Zeolith Pur forms a physical protective film on the leaf surface. The ultra-fine silicate particles strengthen cell walls against fungal pathogens — silicic acid fortifies plant tissue and makes it more resistant to infections. At the same time, the particles act as a natural repellent against aphids and other sucking insects.

Re-spray immediately after rain — the protective film is washed off and must be renewed.

Application: 3 kg per hectare per application, spray pressure at least 3 bar.


For the garden — four to six pumpkin plants

Four to six pumpkin plants provide a family with more than enough harvest for the entire autumn and winter. Here's the simplified plan:

When planting: Mix BODENKRAFT PUR and Basalt Granulat into the planting hole. AM+PLUS into the watering water.

From establishment, every 10–14 days: Fill a spray bottle or small garden sprayer with GRÜNKRAFT Calcium — 20–30g per 1 liter of water. Spray on all leaves, both sides, early in the morning. In humid weather or if powdery mildew is a risk, add GRÜNKRAFT Zeolith Pur.

Every 3–4 weeks: AM+PLUS into the watering water.

After rain: Renew GRÜNKRAFT Zeolith Pur immediately.

What you will observe: The leaves will become darker green and stronger. The fruits will develop more uniformly and a deeper orange. And when harvesting — a Hokkaido that truly smells and tastes like Hokkaido. The Brix check with a refractometer (an optical measuring device for the nutrient density in plant sap) shows the difference in black and white.


Harvest and storage — when and how

Pumpkins are ripe for harvest when the stem is corked (turns brown and dry) and the skin is so hard that you can no longer indent it with your fingernail. For Hokkaido, the skin turns deep orange-red to reddish-brown.

After harvest: Allow pumpkins to ripen for two to three weeks in a dry, airy place — the skin will harden further, and the flavor will intensify.

Storage: Cool and dry at 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. A well-balanced Hokkaido with a high Brix value and high dry matter content will keep for several months — well into winter.

This is the direct result of good soil work and regular foliar fertilization: not only more nutrients in the fruit — but also a fruit that nourishes longer.
