Heavily pregnant mares around the time of birth are at risk from the toxic gases and various contaminants in the bedding, which are often invisible, as are the foals themselves during the first few days of their lives."
We've always known that horse lungs are very sensitive to ammonia, and that it can trigger lung diseases and allergies. If the bedding is temporarily too moist, it provides an ideal breeding ground for putrefactive bacteria . Hoofs and pads can be damaged, and thrush or mud fever can develop.
